400711 2005-11-01 00:46:00 Looking at getting a new phone, and as I sometimes see people whip out new phone releases like they know the range I figure it cant hurt to ask.

The requirements

Vodaphone
Camera, though quality/MP isn't important, I have a real camera for real pics
MP3 Player...this is the real reason I’m looking at a new phone, I presume they have a headphone jack?
Quality software for transferring data from PC to Phone. I have an infrared port on my rig, do these work well?
Durability, can guarantee it will be dropped.

Price, Not really an issue though expensive for no reason won’t be tolerated….

I'm waiting for the release of the nokia N91. It was supposed to be out now, but nokia put it back, something to do with .wma files, so early next year.

It has a 3.5mm jack, and a standard mini usb port. It also has a 2mp camera, bluetooth, WiFi and a 4GB microdrive.

400713 2005-11-01 01:31:00 Interesting. I am a nokia person my self so i suggest you look at the nokia 6680 the vodafone website says it has all of what your looking for. :D

With the software you can use nokia pc suite i use this and it is great. the latest version came with my new phone but if it doesn't you can download it from the nokia website.

I am not sure if it has IR but i have used an IR connection in the past and they do not allow as much ease as with a cable so i would suggest getting a nokia connectivity data cable ;) . i would think it uses a DKU-2 model (I am not sure) you can get these off the net for around $20-$40 (not authentic nokia) or even in store for about $100 (authentic nokia).

As for the durability get a leather case.

Here is the address www.vodafone.co.nz

Hope its helpful

400714 2005-11-01 01:37:00 Cheers, Pity the buttons look tiny, My finger tip would probally cover 4 of them at least....

Seems that all mp3 phones are 3G?, supose it makes sense as they want to sell content.

400715 2005-11-01 02:25:00 Nope, the W800 (also dubbed the sony ericsson phone walkman) is not 3G . If you want a pure MP3 phone, probably that's the one to go .

But really, if you're going on Vodafone, you might as well go 3G . After all, new phones coming out are 80% gonna be of UTMS standard, might as well hop on the bandwagon, right?

Personally, when I consider phones for MP3, I consider whether they allow store on memory sticks, as that will mean you can extend your memory . Common ones like RS-MMC, or Mini SD (on Nokia 6680, V800, etc, all on Vodafone website) . Make sure you don't go for weird ones like the Motorola, with a "T-flash memory card", it might as well be built in, it's a real rare type .

if you like big buttons, mp3, 3G, and vodafone, 6680 is the one for you . (Also watch out for its cousin about to launch soon)

400716 2005-11-01 02:33:00 Dunno about 3G, I mean......I got quite irate with people texting me when they were bored, And I pretty much flamed them :D .Current phone is never answered and I only pull it out of its nook when seeing what the lads are up to over the weekend....

I'll look into the W800.

Edit

looking at the price of the W800 I might as well just consider the 3g units....

Metla, I have just bought a new cell phone after a lot of faffing about . I eventually chose the Sony Ericsson K750i . It basically has the same phone specs, audio capacity, FM Radio, software, size factor, synch options etc as the W800, but it is quite a bit cheaper .

I wanted a phone with a decent resolution screen, a reasonable spec camera (my previous one was crap, and it did happen from time to time that I wanted to take a pic when I had my phone with me but not my digi cam); a ring tone I could hear (I missed heaps of calls with my previous phone); and I wanted a small, light phone (my previous phone has wrecked the inside pockets on my fav jacket . . . ) . I was prepared to pay a bit more for those things .

I bought mine from PC Gear in Dunedin . The price there is not much more than the average price that people are selling them for on TradeMe, once you take the GST out .

Very satisfied thus far . Nice feature when you are configuring your email account - you go to the SonyEricsson Support page, enter in all your account details there, and it emails your config to the phone, automatically setting up the account . The phone settings aren't exactly intuitive (i . e . where do you enter your email account user name???), whereas the website is completely straightforward .
