400607 2005-10-31 08:12:00 Don't know that much about digicams, however I see that camera has a propriety rechargeable battery. Check out the prices of replacement batteries as you will need to at least have a spare handy. Cameras which use generic rechargeable AA sized batteries plus accept disposable AA's are more versatile. Jen (38)

400609 2005-10-31 08:52:00 Must be available here ahead of most other markets. Very little comment on the DPReview Nikon forum, either they can't get it or not interested. PaulD (232)
400610 2005-10-31 09:01:00 Do you have some reason for choosing this camera. It's specs look impressive, although only 3x optical zoom. It seems very new, and features WiFi wireless transfer of images from camera to computer.

Is that a feature you want? Best prices I see in NZ are from $830, which seems expensive compared to other cameras with similar or better specs.

A friend of mine bought his first digcam a few days ago and after doing a lot of research and going to various shops, settled on a Panasonic with a 12x optical zoom and image stabilizer, at Parallel Import. The size is surprisingly small (for a 12x optical) and I believe it has a Carl Zeiss lens.

400612 2005-10-31 09:36:00 I am a Nikon digital SLR user and film user. I don't like the pocket Nikons that much, they just as not good as its competitors.

It is on the expensive side.

It doesn't say but I take it its ISO 400, the aperture as on it, shutter 8 sec - 1/2000 speed. Image stabiliser inside (called VR - vibration reduction).

For better feel, the Fuji or Olympus may be good options too. I would look into Canons and also Pana...

From the list, appears no manual mode and no speed shutter priority mode. It only has auto and many of the dumbo preset modes like fireworks, portrait, lanscape, etc etc.. The best mode it has is aperture priority.

It has wifi. Not sure how the software interface this. Either with its own software like Nikon Picture Project or maybe you need to buy Nikon Capture and use the feature of "Camera Control". It connects the cam via Wifi and you use software to take photo wireless, change setttings, trip the button etc.... The cam can have no mem card and it can download onto the laptop HDD if need be....

I check what software is remote access by. But it does not have manual modes or even speed priotity mode like for sports. Weakness is really how do you use it for sport?? I guess you can think back to front, using aperture priority mode and use a low f# and up the ISO that way and get a higher shutter via that method.

My Canon A510 bought it cheap and small cos that was my purpose with my SLR. It has speed mode, aperture mode and full manual. $300. 3MP.

Edit, no uncompressed modes like RAW on a expensive cam. Not really right is it. It only does JPEG. Checked on DPREVEW.COM as Nikon's site is a bit short on details. RAW can be good cos if you set the wrong white balance it can be redone on the computer, if sharpen or contrast etc.. was too weak or strong u can reselect that option again without altering the file. If you too bright or too dark by 2 full stops it can be corrected for you.

I would read up on pple's opinion on Dpreview.com forum on shutter lag .. how responsive is the cam, how long do u gotta wait before the device take the photo.

IMO it appears this cam, is lack features and not cheap. Competitors offers should be better.

400613 2005-11-01 10:46:00 If you let me bump into this again. For what it is worth of my mouth.

Either get a cheaper cam with more features and v similar or the same pixel rating or else pay a tad more and get a top notch non digital SLR or better get the damn digital SLR.

Provided this is $830 around like one guy says, a top Pana or Fuji can be had for $999 that I saw in person. Or $1250 for a compete dSLR with a kit lens. Those IMO is a better deal. Or else just get a cheaper one with tons of features incl .. full manual should you want to exploit all the potentials of the camera, being a digital camera for most pple and noticeably for computer geeks its probably something you would do anyway. Try as much and film is free.

Edit, I wouldn't care about wifi. Your prob need a laptop to run it and only need it if say you are spying like on widlife using a tripod to hold the camera up or else you are at a wedding or social gathering and you don't have a big enof mem card so you can use a laptop wifi and download onto laptop's hdd instead. Not a big thing IMO for the real world. In the real world for pro SLRs those that cost $5k or more, they have wifi as a added option, they tend to use onsite while the assitant has the laptop and the photog is shooting so much it would be just too expensive to buy so many mem cards. Or a more realistic example, spying on animals like deers so you don't need to hide under that green sheet. Or else, you need to link wifi to a comptuer screen to preview the full sizes and check it as you are doing modelling photographs .....

For my dSLR never done it, I got cable not wifi, ok once as I was cleaning my sensor myself and needed the laptop to check the images full size and knowing where to clean my sensor .... haha. I can do mine via cable. Never used it. I have loaded a contrast curve into my camera thou and thats it - prob something you don;t have on your one.

400614 2005-11-01 11:51:00 I think its a gimmick. Well ok, I think with wifi you can buy a wifi adaptor for the "direct printing" photo printers, so hey you can print wireless in true style. *sigh* for a domestic camera who in the world would really need it. You could get a entry or mid level dSLR and its a Nikon or Canon brand yet these don't have Wifi but, I note that these two brands Canon and Nikon have issued Wifi digicams out for nephews and uncles, aunts. :p

Wireless broadband internet .. now we getting way off topic.

Maybe as useful as sending a PXT or do a 3G Telephone video call to someone else. I personally have not ever sent one PXT, haha....
