399798 2005-10-27 18:43:00 As we approach this most pointless of "celebrations", it would be interesting to see how other Kiwis view Halloween .

Personally, I hate it . Not because of any Satanist/occult reasons that religious nutters may drag out, but for the following reasons:

It's all about Me Me Me .
Gimme Gimme Gimme .
There are no redeeming features about it at all . Trick or treat? Give me lollies or I'll play a trick on you? (even though the kids probably never do) .
Just the very concept of "give me something nice or else" is not an attitude that we should encourage in our kids .

Some little brats take advantage of Halloween to create more havoc in their neighbourhoods than usual . Just ask any cop . Many old people living on their own are very intimidated by these brats .

It's just another excuse to spend money .
With Christmas fast approaching, plus Guy Fawkes, all we need is more reasons to spend money .

Unfortunately, it's just not safe for kids (even supervised) to go door-to-door these days .

Dying to hear opposing views .

399799 2005-10-27 19:03:00 I think it's damn cute having the little ones come round asking for a few sweets. But on the other hand I entirely disagree with it because of it's origins. Greg (193)
399800 2005-10-27 19:07:00 Agree with all those points, it's just another Americanism that must have come here at some time. Never heard of "trick or treat" in UK, at least not south of a line Birmingham to the Wash :) Terry Porritt (14)
399801 2005-10-27 19:35:00 I can't stand the whole trick or treat thing, but halloween is a good excuse to get drunk & check out all the gothic chicks that can actually go all out without all the dumb ****s thinking they are devil worshipers (Invercargill is full of bogans & ruggers that aren't too inteligent). 399802 2005-10-27 19:35:00 Sad sack, cheer up its only one night each year, and it's fun for the kids, and you also get to meet the people down the street.

Otherwise I would suggest you get a pump action shotgun and a box of blanks, and scare them off your property. You will then get the title of "Grumpy old git". Spose you dont like Xmas either.

399803 2005-10-27 19:39:00 I knew I'd get at least one reply like that.
Thanks, Rob.
Bah, humbug.

I just close the curtains & pretend I'm not home.
;)

Fun for the kids, maybe, but it still teaches Gimme Gimme Gimme.

399804 2005-10-27 19:52:00 No - it is an American invention. Soon we will be celebrating Thanksgiving too...

I don't keep sweets in my house anyway. And it won't be an issue soon as all the kids will be diabetics.

399806 2005-10-27 20:09:00 The gates to the Metla hacienda will be closed and locked, and perhaps the hellhounds set loose.

Prefer to kick back and relax when I'm in residence, not constantly answer the door to brats looking for free stuff, They can go through the gear at the refuse station like the rest of the freeloaders.

You must have had a sheltered life Terry, you don't even know the customs in your own country.
