399650 2005-10-27 03:10:00 Hey all,

Yesterday between 10:30am - 1pm my laptop, carry bag and 40gb mobile drive (which was in the bag) was stolen from my living room.
I have notified the police and given as much info as possible and finger prints and photos were taken by them early this afternoon.
The only items that were taken were the laptop, bag and hdd and they were all out of sight which unfortunatly means it is someone whom I have spoken to or seen me with my laptop or they have a big mouth.

The laptop is new and I've only just started paying it off but more importantly there was a lot of personal info and docs on there and on my mobile as the back up.

The details of it are:

Asus A4000K
Sempron 3000+ (1.8ghz)
64MB ATI Radeon 9700 video card
60GB hard drive
1GB ram
15.4" widescreen monitor

The laptop had Windows XP and 2003 Server as a dual boot arrangment.

The mobile drive was a silver 40GB Lacie with "Designed by F.A.Porsche" stamped on the side.

Any information about the where-abouts of my stuff would be greatly appreciated - either via email huntm@ihug.co.nz or phone 0296978772

Also stolen was my flat mates 027 Nokia work phone - of which the theif(s) had made 3 calls between 1:10pm and 1:40pm and this information has also been given to the Police for investigating.

Thanks

Hunt

399651 2005-10-27 03:15:00 I have allways wondered why people don't engrave their details into their laptop.

Not that I have done so, Perhaps I should.

Anyhow, chances are that your laptop was formatted within a few minutes of being snacthed.

Offer a $1000 reward for its return (which is far more then what it will go for as a hot item) and when someone tries to claim it.....Whack them with a heavy stick.Repeatedly.

399652 2005-10-27 03:20:00 INSURANCE? plod (107)
399653 2005-10-27 03:21:00 I think they should get guys like this, and shoot them in public or something. This would set a precedent for people who steal stuff, and would be much more effective than scaring them with having to lean on a shovel for 20 hours (community service).

My 2cents ;)

where would i need to go to get this done?

sounds like a good idea to me.....

and im pretty sure your laptop will be gone. even if it was password protected there are still ways to get past it and/or format your drive.

claim the insurance.

bad luck :(

399655 2005-10-27 03:45:00 You can buy an engraver for less then a tenner, or altenativly get it done at a shop, off the top of my head there is a locksmith I know who does it so maybe they all do?, just down the road from him is a signwriting bizzo that does engraving, and a trophy shop that does it just a bit futher along, and I would imagine the Jewellers that still do onsite work would do it, though probally cost a bit.

Anyhow, there are many I can think of local, so it can't be hard for you to find someone local.

Now that the subject has been raised I'm definitly going to get mine done.

399657 2005-10-27 03:57:00 Hi Prescott. Get it done where it is really visible. Might save you the hassle of the thief carrying the thing away and then discarding it when he/she finds the engraving. Scouse (83)
399658 2005-10-27 04:19:00 My greatest sympathies . Why are there so many ratbags out there??

You haven't stated your location - where in the country are you?

INSURANCE?Insurance is good but won't get the data back .

I agree about the engraving - the more conspicious the better . Our local malls have key cutting booths with engraving services available as well so check out how neat their work is . Otherwise there should be a similar shop somewhere in your town that can do it for you, Prescott .

399659 2005-10-27 04:29:00 well I hate to kick people when they are down, but having a backup drive or any backup is pretty pointless if its in the same location as the computer? plod (107)
