The first thing you should do is turn off the wireless router when no one is using it. It will mean they can only ensure they can use yuor wireless when you are. Also turn on wpa, but that has been mentioned several times already. So, thanks for the advice... I've gone so far as to find the MAC address of the thief, but yeah, not too sure as to what to do now. I'm keen to find the name/address/any details of whoever it is, we live in a house with four pretty small flats in it, and it's almost definitely one of our neighbours. And I don't care if getting into their system is illegal, i'm not going to cause any harm. Think of it as self-defense of a sort. Second is do a port scan on their computer, to see what their computer is open to; look for services which may be useful (eg rdesktop). Superscan is a good program. But even if the user is foolish enough to have that service running, you will still need to know a username and password to login to the computer. I'm not familiar with wireless traffic capture, but you could also setup wireshark to capture broadcast traffic and look at what kind of traffic that mac address is sending. Useful information includes things like usernames and passwords for forums and other sites which are not encrypted. You could google those, and you'd probably get a few hits such as what forums they visit. Even then, it wont be their real name. But people in forums who may know them personally may use their real name. Because they are unaware you know they are using your internet, there is so much you could to do break their computer and make it unusable. I'm guessing they are downloading a lot of large files? There are ways to stop their downloads mid way, forcing them to start again. When they restart it, you may find out what they are downloading and where from. If you're a computer geek, these would be easier :p Good luck with bringing down the hammer of god on them. I wish I could help more :) |
