399561 2005-10-30 08:53:00 When we were at Richmond last time I picked up a pamphlet on a Arts and Crafts drive. It had potteries and crafty places all marked on the pamphlet, and may be also worth a look. No big walks for the wife, but she may find some of the places great to spend money. LOL supergran (108)
399562 2005-10-30 10:23:00 Hi Tony

Not sure if you have booked accomadation but you seem to be doing a lot of backtracking in your beta plan.

Day 1, big day in the car for a non-local if you want to take in all the sights, why not overnight in Takaka, good cafes, motels etc, and saves 1 and half hours at the end of the day.
Day 2, travel to Marahau or kaiteriteri for the boat - equal distance from Takaka or Nelson so no time lost by staying in Golden Bay (unless of course you were going to stay in Kaiteriteri or Motueka), re the Mot Valley, Tapawera etc, a nice drive if you have the time, but the coastal route through Mapua is very nice and the inland route through Moutere will take you past many great wineries/potters/goumet foodie places, then stay in Nelson this night
Day 3, WOW, Macs, & Nelson scenic drive will take in most must do's. Lambretta's is always good, but also some fantastic eating on the waterfront. There is so much to do this side of the hill I wouldn't be sure about the havelock/pelorus jaunt - also with a plane to catch I would stay closer to town and maybe do the pottery/arts circuit as suggested, also a new Museum opened last week (100m from Lambretta's and the Vic Rose) so you could beat me to it.
Save Marlborough for the next lot of air points and spend a few days there - both areas need a few days to do them justice, and you want to go back at least thinking you have had a rest!

399563 2005-10-30 18:16:00 Not sure if you have booked accommodation but you seem to be doing a lot of backtracking in your beta plan.Yes we have booked a hotel - part of the airpoints deal. I agree with you about the idea of staying in Takaka - I think if I was starting again with a blank sheet of paper I would probably do that.

We have already decided (beta 2 :D ) to come back from the cruise via Moutere instead of the longer way round.

The plane home doesn't leave till ~18:00, so we do have a good day there to do stuff in.

399564 2005-11-08 04:09:00 The boss and I are using up some expiring airpoints and flying to Nelson for 3 full days at the beginning of November .

So - how did it go Tony ?

399565 2005-11-10 05:16:00 Well folks,

Got back last night - had a great time! Here's the pseudo blog: :)

Monday:
Up at 4:30 am :yuck: In the hire car in Nelson by 8:15. Checked in to hotel, then straight up North to Cape Farewell and all points in between. Takaka Hill was interesting in the low overcast. Takaka itself was shut. Early lunch at the Courthouse at Collingwood, great scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Off to Cape Farewell (imagef1.dannz.net.nz), where we had our photos taken by an English Tourist who had difficulty handling the camera. Stopped off on the way back at Anatoki Salmon ( That is a great place - why didn't anyone tell us? It is a salmon hatchery that also has a lake where you can borrow a rod (free) catch the salmon pay for what you catch and then get it gutted and/or" target="_blank">www.anatokisalmon.co.nz/). That is a great place - why didn't anyone tell us? It is a salmon hatchery that also has a lake where you can borrow a rod (free) catch the salmon pay for what you catch and then get it gutted and smoked and eat it/take it home.
Did a detour up the Aorere Valley - really pretty. We were aiming for the Naked Possum at Aorere - not worth the detour. Heading back South, the weather had cleared and the Takaka Hill views were spectacular. Back to Nelson via the Moutere Highway. Great Fish and Chips and the Victoria Rose.

Tuesday:
Arrive Kaiteriteri 09:00 for the boat trip. Great weather, though fairly breezy once we got up the coast a bit. The scenery (imagef1.dannz.net.nz) is wonderful - I hope all those people who were sensible anough to choose ancestors who built the various baches up the coast realize how lucky they are. The tour company gives me the impression that they haven't quite made the transition form a mail/milk run to a full tourist trip. It wasn't a mail run where you get to stop off everywhere and it is really slow and leisurely, and it wasn't a tourist trip where you get a really informed commentary. The comments came basically straight out of the brochure. I got the impression that the skipper would have preferred it if we all just left him alone. Dinner that eveniong at the Smugglers Rest next to the motel- good beer and not a bad atmosphere.

Wednesday:
Slightly later start and headed in the other direction. Thought we were going to run out of gas - the hire car (Daihatsu Sirion :yuck: ) had a stupid LCD fuel gauge that just went down in blocks, but we found petrol before Jean had to start walking. Morning tea at Pelorus Bridge - great cheese scones. If it had been nearer lunch time they had some great looking pies of all descriptions. Walked across the suspension bridge (imagef1.dannz.net.nz) then it was off to Havelock - pretty but boring. Back in Nelson by early afternoon, walked around the Centre, visited the Suter Gallery (not bad), WOW (great) and McMillan Ceramics (waste of time - trust me, I used to be a potter). On the plane at 17:30, back in Waitakere City by 19:30.

It was a really good, relaxing trip and I've probably missed bits out. Thanks everyone for all their help and advice.

399566 2005-11-10 05:37:00 Sounds like you had a lot of fun Tony, and were very busy. So much for a relaxing weekend huh? :p

Pity about the Abel Tasman boat trip. The one I went on had a very good crew with plenty of commentary. I want to go back there and do a kayaking trip now. :)

399568 2005-11-15 06:39:00 visited the Suter Gallery (not bad),

Yes, forgot about that - else would have recommended. However it does vary greatly depending upon what artist(s) are being displayed.....everything from marvellous to c..p !!

You did not get to the "Wearable Arts" - was it not open at the time you were in the neighbourhood or did you run out of time. It is still there is'nt it ??
