400924 2005-10-31 09:53:00 Oh - I don't see how so many 'DVDs' can be downloaded. 1 DVD = 4.7GB. On most broadband connections in NZ, that means busting your data cap pretty quickly or spending about a week downloading it.
XviD and Mp3 compression can get a movie down to about 700mb and it will still look pretty good. Generally there is better quality avi movies to download ie 2 parts at 700mb each. TV episodes are about 350mb for a 40min episode and are pretty decent quality.

400925 2005-10-31 10:13:00 Program he used was Pirate Hunter... bet it only covers P2P and not the newsgroups which remain basically unmentioned!

Metla - what question was he cornered with? I didn't quite get that part.

Lo.

When he was asked how they knew who the people were who were downloading, he grasped for an answer and came up with " Its to do with the agreement we have with the makers of the program,Pirate Hunter"

Translated, Means they don't know squat, And can only find out squat through the usual channels, Which as far as I know means the cops have to pettion the court, which they wont do unless they are hunting a conviction, Which they aint gonna do over someone leeching some low quality crap over P2P and which falls well outside those they are looking for, the distributers who produce, package and sell the goods.

Thats my spin on it anyhow, I got a freind (not in thie country) who was fingered by Macromedia for downloading their gear, He was sent an email by his ISP telling him that Macromedia notified them of his IP....and that was all that happened...A move to torrents sorted that out....

Oh yeah, Piracy is bad :D

PS-He was using the Donkey when he got fingered.

Must be in the eye of the beholder then, I find 700mb movies to be delete bin specials.

Uh, Not that I have ever downloaded any, They must be home movies that I have compressed for the sake of comparison.

Remember Piracy is bad, especially if you have a pirated pair of Nike's, You should really pay $200 for you 25c pair of shoes so the suits can own a private Jet each.

Well the report specified DVDs.
DVDs aren't DivX/Xvid.
The movie bit (which is the main bit!) might be the same but that's where the comparison ends.

400930 2005-10-31 19:29:00 Interesting that the police don't have the resources to investigate real crime as reported in the papers over the past few days but do have them when Hollywood says jump.. paulw (1826)
400931 2005-10-31 19:40:00 Thats because of the funding... They're more likely to get paid out $$ for nabbing a Pirate than a Rapist right!

When connecting to a torrent, sometimes its possible to see the IPs of the other users on the tracker. Findnot.com used to provide you with your GPS location, and every time I tried it, it was usually accurate to within 10meters.

Realistically thats what, maybe two houses to come-a-knocking-to if somebody did decide to try and track that sorta stuff down. Its not difficult either, to look at a list of the users on a torrent and say "Hey, its nice to know there's a 3 other Gentoo users somewhere in NZ right now downloading this same Universal CD".

Two-pass encoding with XviD or Lavc is a very viable option. Of course you dont really wanna encode anything longer than 120 minutes to a 700MB file, maybe a 900MB file instead :) If you'd actually tried it yourself Metla, you might have seen how great the results can be. I should send you a family video of mine sometime so you can be the judge... Msg me and I'll make you a sample at the same bitrate.

Ive got a friend in Japan who's had to change ISP's three times because he was busted using edonkey by his ISP and failed to stop using it so they cut his connection :(
