Good riddance. It is never a good idea to go clicking on random links posted by new people on this forum until they have "earned their stripes".

Unless you like living dangerously, of course.

Opera or Firefox ftw.
I like that, ninja. I really like that.

399895 2005-10-28 22:19:00 In recent communication I've had with the user dds, he claims he did not realise that the URL could lead to a virus being downloaded if followed. He apologises for this and stated it was not his intention to cause harm to forum members. Jen (38)
399896 2005-10-28 22:40:00 Thank-you Jen...that was very quick of you to spot that...again...thanks! SurferJoe46 (51)

How would that help? You are being asked to download an exe file. The result would have been the same in any browser - an ignorant user downloads the file, then runs it & gets infected.

Well, start a linux virus writing project on sourceforge then :D

Alas, successful virus circulation requires a human element most of the time.

I was never asked to download an exe when I opened the site.

The particular page dds linked to didn't ask u to download an .exe. But the website messengerstats.net has been involved in a recent msn virus outbreak.

This is from MSN Fanatic: (http://www.msnfanatic.com/)

"This post will be short 'til further details emerge, but just in the last 10 minutes people on my contact have been sending me messages in the following way:

wow, this is you? www.messengerstats.net

Do not click this link when you receive something similar. We cannot confirm what it is at this stage but its most likely a worm or virus so all problems regarding this can be posted in the forum. "

A later post stated:

"After yesterdays attempt to create and spread a new worm that uses MSN Messenger as the delivery point, the site spreading it was removed and domain is now available for legitimate use. So to those who still haven't removed it, here is a way which TheSteve has kindly written:

The executable file extracts 3 files in to windows\system32\(random dir):
csrss.exe
smss.exe
csrss.ini

All of which have system/hidden flags set. Task Manager will not kill either exe, so go get a copy of Process Explorer at sysinternals.com. Make sure not to kill the actual system processes!

It's great to see it was able to be removed in a timely manner and is now no longer a threat."

I'm still unsure why dds found that link so interesting, and whether he intended it too be malicious or not
