399660 2005-10-27 05:14:00 What's the penalty now anyway, for a house burglary? For a 2nd time offender?

6mths in jail (minus parole), and 50hrs of community service?

Just give an indication, I won't express my opinion of whether it's harsh or not as I don't want to start a debate about that

399663 2005-10-27 09:30:00 I used a soldering iron to engrave the plastic base of my laptop, it melts the words in the plastic, just don't hold it in one place too long! Jester (13)
399664 2005-10-29 05:26:00 I hope you get your gear back Hunt.
Just a quick question about laptop security: are boot passwords ineffective at 'locking' laptops?

If, by "boot password" you mean "BIOS Password", then they give a small measure of protection of data access depending on the laptop.

Some require a trip to a service agent to unlock, some can be unlocked by using Google to get the info and some (IBM) models actually lock the hard drive as well.

But its certainly better than just a Windows Password.

399668 2005-10-29 06:13:00 you can get programs installed on your laptop so if it gets stolen, and it connects to the internet, it tracks it down or sends some details, not sure on the details though Prescott (11)
