674981 2008-06-02 09:07:00 Why is it that my Brother printer won't print B & W when the colour inks have run out ? I mainly print text only, but occasionally will print in colour hence why they are empty .

It just pisses me off that they force my to spend the price of a new printer on colour ink that I don't really need .

Yeah I'm cheap but really its the principle behind the scam I don't like .

I thought maybe filling up my diamond encrusted ink bottles with ink drained from a few Bic pens might be a solution ????? Anyone got a better idea especially if you know how to trick the sensors .

674982 2008-06-02 09:12:00 Depending on the model, some do have firmware updates for the printer (Is it an MFC printer)?

I know one of the firmware updates I installed for this one was for false reading of the ink cartridges (MFC-215C)

BUT, I'm pretty sure it states what you said, in the manual as well.

674983 2008-06-02 11:15:00 Someone once told me that they actually use the ink to cool the printer heads and nozzles.

Prob BS but theres one possible explanation.

674984 2008-06-02 21:50:00 Why is it that my Brother printer won't print B & W .

Actually printers print Black, not black and white.
White comes from the paper.

674985 2008-06-03 10:00:00 Amen to that, specially as the ink is used up in endless noisy head cleaning. tutaenui (1724)
674986 2008-06-03 10:17:00 Why is it that my Brother printer won't print B & W when the colour inks have run out ?

It should print B&W if you have it set to "B&W"

If you have it set to "Colour" then it won't print a B&W document unless you have enough coloured ink to mix all together to get black .

674987 2008-06-03 12:23:00 They learned that trick from Epson, who make a great deal of money from ink at up to $1700 / litre R2x1 (4628)
674988 2008-06-03 23:57:00 Yep encountered same issue with MFC

brother suggest copy a colour page once a week
to keep print heads from self cleaning using expensive ink

long term though if you want only to print black get a black only printer
HP lasers were good not sure now though

or more
www.google.com

I have software that resets my Epson ink levels. Never used it but I am told it works.
