674912 2008-06-02 07:31:00 Hi all, long time reader first time poster, I'm hoping you folk can help me out.

I purchased a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router to use in conjunction with our Speedtouch (standard Telecom) DSL modem, but for the life of me I cannot configure it correctly.

I get so far as to have everything connect fine and running normal, but the laptops connecting wirelessly through the router do not get internet access.

I have run the setup CD for the router which didn't do anything at all, I have also tried to configure IP addresses etc manually by reading various networking tutorials on the net but I'm back to square one, we still don't have internet access, so we're back using the ethernet cables.

I'm hoping one of your knowledgeable people can give me a bit of walk-through or something to try and get me on track.

Thanks very much :)

PS: Both computers are running XP, 1 Home Ed, 1 Pro.

674913 2008-06-02 07:38:00 Welcome Josh !

It'd probably be easier biffing both of those and getting a modem/router/wireless all in one.

It seems a lot of people who use a separate modem/router/ wireless always have probs with trying to configure the wireless.

Or to get it to work

There's a few posts in here somewhere, where people have tried to get the 2 to be nice to each other, but it always fails

It maybe because they may use different ip addresses, if you want to configure them, which probably screws things up

674915 2008-06-02 08:58:00 I have the same wireless router connected to a Dynalink DSL router/modem . My settings listed below may possibly help .

Dynalink main router/modem gateway: 192 . 168 . 1 . 1
LinkSys wireless router: 192 . 168 . 1 . 2
Main PC (wired): 192 . 168 . 1 . 25
2nd PC (wired)LAN: 192 . 168 . 1 . 30
Laptop wireless: 192 . 168 . 1 . 40

Dynalink (primary router) configured as normal .

LinkSys configured as secondary router:
Automatic configuration - DHCP
DHCP disabled
Local IP address: 192 . 168 . 1 . 2

The wireless router is "cascaded", ie it is the secondary router and the Dynalink is the primary router/modem which connects to the internet . It controlls all your Internet accessing rules and your entire home network therefore the IP numbers given to the routers themselves are critical .

Dont forget to apply your wireless security after you have got everything up and running . Good luck .

674917 2008-06-02 09:27:00 I wouldn't go throwing the lot out and buying an all in one. Have configured this type many times with no problem. Even the default settings normally work. Setup as per Smokey's post. Should work fine. berryb (99)
674918 2008-06-04 02:51:00 has this been resolved? smokey (13809)
674919 2008-06-05 23:01:00 Yep.

I sent the router back to Ascent for a refund.

Now looking into a wired solution which is going to work out easier.

674920 2008-06-05 23:10:00 Sweet as. It's not so much that that setup won't work, it's the hardware involved, and having the knowledge to get them to play well together.

Those speedtouch modems are utter crap, unfortunately. You will be better off getting an all in one.

Belkin make good all in one modems/routers. So you have the option to go wireless or wired, and add switches/range extenders etc etc etc.... :p
