674894 2008-06-02 04:29:00 My first post so please be gentle .

Have just upgraded hardware including a new hard drive . Have made the old drive a slave disk and this still holds all the old files including operating system files

Have installed XP on the new hard drive and now are required to install service packs 1 and 2 so new software will work .

As I am on dial up i want to avoid a 226MB download if possible .

Is there any way to transfer the necessary files from the old drive to the new install .

Also with windows update the files are automatically installed . Is there a way of saving these files to avoid a need to download if reinstalling the operating system at a future time .

Thanks for any help .

674895 2008-06-02 04:37:00 No you cant tranfer the service packs from the old hdd to the new. You can order the cd from MS tho.

Also SP3 is out now too, but its bigger.

Are you in NZ somewhere?? If so where?? Maybe someone here can help you out, if youre in NZ. Depending on where you are.

You could download the updates separately, and put them on a spare partition, but that can take forever

Whats the specs of your system??

674898 2008-06-02 06:09:00 Give me your address in a PM Am

I'll see if I can send a SP3 cd.

I've got the ISO on the hdd here, just have to burn it to CD

674899 2008-06-02 06:42:00 SP3.............hmmmmm..........just make sure you make an IMAGE of the system BEFORE you install it..........

just had a hair raising experince because tho I did make a ghost image BEFORE installing sp3, the damnned image was faulty (bad disk). Anyway sp3 caused endless reboots.......yep I've read this can happen on amd systems but this was core2duo intel.........anyway went to re-instate the ghosted image and .......BUGGER........

long story short.......total clean insatll.......grrrrrrrrrr

674900 2008-06-02 06:45:00 But was it on an HP system / laptop/desktop. Or did you build this PC??

There's probably a difference

674902 2008-06-02 08:13:00 Thanks Speedy

I'll check with my tech who built the system, I was just hoping to for a quick fix so I could get everything tidied up this weekend. Will contact you if I have no joy. BTW, what is a PM Am....just to live up to my handle

674903 2008-06-02 08:47:00 Many hard drive manufactureres have available a program to image your current hard drive contents over to the new one which would make things easier for you. Unless you particularly wanted a fresh install on your new drive. smokey (13809)
