| 400630 | 2005-10-31 19:18:00 | We are just starting our Fall moods here . . . falling leaves and temperatures dropping into the nightly high 60'sF/16C . Daytime high temps will be about 90F/32C . The "Santana" or "Devil" winds are blowing from the deserts and making the static electricity voltages jump . One can get a spark 2 inches long to a doorknob or appliance from your hand . The firestorm season is upon us now and we will have many disasterous scenes with homes and property going up in flames . The winds will help fan the flames . It is not unusual to have 60 mph/96 kmph winds pushing the flames about as fast . All the water from the heavy rains we had this Spring/Summer grew amazingly abundant crops of weeds and wildflowers that will now be fuel for the fires . What we need right now is a good earthquake to make it all complete . "Normally" our rainy season is from February to April, but things are all messed up with the El Nino from the Mexican waters . What's "Kia Ora" mean? |

| 400631 | 2005-10-31 20:05:00 | (snip) What's "Kia Ora" mean? Literally it means "may you have health", or "be well". It is a common greeting in Maori. So it has a similar meaning to "Hello", "Gudday mate", "Ow are ya going, OK?" etc. Kia ora koe - to one person Kia ora korua - to two people Kia ora koutou - to more than two people Kia ora tatou - kia ora to all of us in a group. A few years back, a Maori toll operator with the monopoly phone provider of the time (precursor to Telecom), decided to answer calls with "Kia ora". They threatened to sack her, and it became a public issue. Eventually she was vindicated, but it was nasty at the time. Now it is far more common to hear the greeting, from Pakeha as well as Maori. Part of Maori becoming an official language as a result of a claim to the Treaty of Waitangi Tribunal. Only about 150 years after colonisation that is... |
