675801 2008-06-05 04:43:00 I've got one of the above to fix for a friend, and when I go to power it on I can hear the HDD spin up very briefly, and all the indicator lights (mute, volume slider, power on etc) stay lit up solid blue, and I get nothing on the screen at all. If I try to boot up an Ubuntu live CD etc, I can hear the CD spin up, but still nothing on the screen. Connect a monitor to it, and still nothing.

Is it likely to be the graphics card? I've read on some sites that there's an issue with them coming loose? It's the model with a Turion CPU and a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 GPU.

TIA

675802 2008-06-05 04:53:00 How old is this Lappie - I notice on HP's site it ranges from win 2000 - Vista ? it sounds a little like a Mother Board problem, if its still under warranty it could be claim time. wainuitech (129)
675803 2008-06-05 05:06:00 Fairly new Wainui - less than a year .

She's a bit of a muppet to be honest . . . . . friend of a friend :p She'd only had said lappy a week, and somehow decided that trying to install XP Pro over Vista was the best way to find a file she'd misplaced????

WTF?? :illogical :groan:

675804 2008-06-05 05:17:00 Yep sounds like the mainboard.
Had the exact same problem with the same model about a month ago and HP replaced the mainboard under warranty.

675805 2008-06-05 05:18:00 Same here - warranty and fast. wratterus (105)
675806 2008-06-05 05:25:00 Had one doing that last month.
I'm still not sure what was causing it but after re-sealing the heat sink to the cpu it hasnt missed a beat.

675807 2008-06-05 05:27:00 Awesome - thanks all :punk

The more I look on google, the more similar stories I find with this and similar models - something to do with a thin mobo, and Ball Grid Array chips that pop their solder joints when the lappy is picked up roughly, and mobo flexes etc.

Cheers!

That sounds like a software issue (not covered by warranty). Perhaps you should let it finish whatever it is trying to do, then next time it might boot up properly.

What anti-virus product are you using?
