675746 2008-06-05 03:51:00 I recently went to a Telecom site showing their ADSL2+ roll out schedule to check on the status of the Albany exchange . I was delighted to read that the exchange was ‘Fully Migrated to ADSL2+’ as at 25 January 2008 .

Good, I thought to myself, I’ll buy myself a nice new modem/router that is ADSL2+ enabled and get better speeds . But before doing so I decided to contact the Telecom call centre to check whether or not the mini DSLAM in my local box had been upgraded or needed to be upgraded as well . The rep scarcely knew what I was talking about and suggested that I email my query to broadband@telecom . co . nz .

The correspondence copied below makes me wonder if anyone in Telecom knows anything about their system .

Me --------------------------------------------------------

A rep at the call centre has asked me to contact you with this query . My phone number is … and my broadband is via a local box ref ALYQ DSLAM01 MDR RAN11 .

I wanted to know if it was worth the expense of upgrading from my present
modem to a new ADSL2+ model . My understanding that although the Albany
Exchange has been fully migrated to ADSL2+ the local box mini DSLAM (a
Conklin) is not yet capable as it needs to be upgraded with a new one
capable of better speeds .

Your help is appreciated .

Them ---------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your email .

At present the ADSL2 is still in trail mode in some exchanges around the country . As you're connected to the exchange via a Conklin, the chances of an upgrade in the future are minimal . At present there is little information I can provide you, and based on this I would suggest you go out and invest in a new modem .

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me .

Kind regards

Can any techie out there tell me if I would be better off or not to get a new modem/router? I currently use US Robotics 9106 Sure Connect yielding speeds of around 2265 kbps down and 131 kbps up and my copper line is about 1 . 6 km from the local box .

675747 2008-06-05 04:14:00 It means you're out of luck.
Telecom won't do these for quite a long time.

They've said no Conklin upgrade, little information, so why do they suggest spending money on a new modem?

Have you checked what the USR is capable of anyway?

675749 2008-06-05 04:19:00 My understanding is that in areas where they have upgraded the hardware, they've sent letters to each household saying so and suggesting that they upgrade to the new ADSL2+ plans. somebody (208)
675750 2008-06-05 06:16:00 See if you can borrow an ADSL2+ capable router and try it out? Agent_24 (57)
675751 2008-06-05 08:00:00 "At present the ADSL2 is still in trail mode in some exchanges around the country."

Does Telecom just follow along the trail? On a horse perhaps. Maybe they meant trial?

Just plodding along here on a Clydesdale with four very wooly feet.

That Email reply seems to be a little pathetic if quoted correctly.

For the record I am on broadband with Xtra but have fun trailing it!!! :-)

675752 2008-06-05 10:38:00 If you are on a conklin then you won't get dsl2 speeds. The limit on those is 8M/800k.How do you know you are on a conklin anyway.Did they tell you.?

675753 2008-06-05 10:42:00 Thanks for your comments guys.

The quotes are exactly as lifted from the e-mails.

I agree that if nothing else it shows Telecom can't spell. Nor do they display any logic, yes why buy an ADSL2+ modem if they don't offer the service. Also it shows that they don't know what they are doing and that they are telling Porkies. (Again! but I thought that the fat female CEO had left?)

I think in summary it means that the rollout to new local boxes (currently around 8% are connected by this method) will have new hardware but that any existing ones are stuck with old technology.

Wonder if this is the sort of result the Minister expected with naked dsl and unbundled competion?

675754 2008-06-05 10:51:00 Hi Peter,

I know I am on a Conklin because I looked in over the techie when they first installed them in my local box. At the time Telecom had adopted this model because it was a cheap alternative to the Alcatels they had previously used.

The information you have given me is very helpful.

AFAIK at the time Conklins were introduced they were the only units installed in cabinets, there was no "previous" .
