401951 2005-11-05 20:20:00 No selling to under 18s.
Just because they may still be able to get their hands on them, isn't justification for not changing that law, which would be perfectly reasonable.

I feel sorry for all the people on shift-work who are trying desperately to get sleep?
Most of the fireworks stopped at about 10pm but there were still a few going off at almost midnight. All very well if it's just one night of the year but it's not. It's for about 2 weeks.
Don't get me wrong - I love going to fireworks displays - I just think people's money for be far better spent going to watch a professional display rather than setting of piddly little bangers in the back yard. People just need to be mindful of when and where they set them off and appreciate the fact that not everyone will want to experience their own version of a fireworks display.

401952 2005-11-05 21:32:00 A large part of the reason things are stating to get banned; are the idiot teens who just don't care . . . don't care that they damaged so and so's house by doing some stupid f**k thing, they don't care they shoved a big cracker up a cats a$$ to see what would happen, or how far it would run before it fell over .
<snip>
There are always going to be the idiots out there, they have been around for years, and they will stay with us . The only thing thats changed is the number of idiots, there seem to be a lot more of them, and the stupidity level has increased .
Tazz has said it all far better than I could have put it . Those are the exact same reasons that I would support a ban on the public buying fireworks .

I couldn't care less whether the idiots doing stupid things with fireworks did damage to themselves or their own property but unfortunately there have been and are a lot of innocent people, animals and property that suffer and get damaged due to the antics of the stupids .

A friend had a dog that was totally deaf due to a couple of teenagers putting crackers in her ears when just a pup and I have heard of others suffering the same fate .

I know of quite a few people who need to sedate their pets before fireworks night as they become so terrified of the din going on outside .

When I was a kid a group of boys a little older than myself almost set the neighbour's house on fire playing with fireworks when the grass and bushes caught fire .

When skyrockets were legal they were the bane of the fire service as there were always fires starting up on the dry Port Hills .

And just last week a girl at the local high school had to go to hospital when her classmate let off fireworks right next to her ear and deafened her . Hopefully no serious permanent damage has been done but she will be very lucky if that is the case . Needless to say he is now in big trouble for having fireworks at school .

Fireworks are a lot of fun but it is always the idiotic few who spoil it for the rest, unfortunately . :(

401953 2005-11-05 22:05:00 Now the morning of the day after Guy Fawks and I didn't see anything or hear anything or smell anything and there's no sign of smoke around.

I wonder if there seem to be more 'idiot's around just because the populatrion has gone up. Gone from 3 mill something to 4 mill in my lifetime.

401954 2005-11-05 22:08:00 There will be more fireworks 2nite since the outlook is fine so far in Jafaland... Mr Wetzyl (362)
401955 2005-11-07 04:16:00 I don't think they should be banned but I think they should be restricted to Guy Fawks day between the hours of say 6pm to midnight. In my location it has been like a war zone for about a week now and some inconsiderate people letting off blockbusters at 2am in the morning.
Any infringement of this restriction should incur an immediate fine of not less than $100.

401956 2005-11-07 11:19:00 Just a few tongue in cheek disjointed thoughts:

There is a lot of pleasure created from the use of fireworks.

There is a lot of misery caused by the use of fireworks.

The Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) charges premiums based on the cost of accidents for different categories. eg: At work accidents, motor vehicle accidents etc. NZ businesses, taxpayers and vehicle owners pay for this.

For general insurance, companies charge premiums based on the cost of claims. Increased premiums due to Fire and Theft claims are spread over all policyholders. Increased premiums due to Motor Vehicle claims are mainly paid for by the individuals concerned.

Ultimately, uninsured damage caused by fireworks gets paid by all NZ taxpayers whether or not they use fireworks. Non-taxpayers pay nothing.

So, what about putting a (user pays) tax on the annual sale of fireworks based of every single cost that can be ascertained from the previous year's Guy Fawkes celebrations. Include all costs involved such as: Firefighters' wages including penal time, fire engine maintenance, bonus for callouts, meal money, and include payments for otherwise voluntary firefighters, ditto for all medical staff costs, ambulances, hospitals, compensation for property damages, letterboxes etc, full cost of any veterinary services and compensation for distress of pet owners, special treat meals for suffering pets, compensation for business and homeowners who suffer any costs due to nearby scrub fires if caused by fireworks, the list goes on and on and on!

That way, we keep Guy Fawkes celebrations, with the users paying the full costs involved.
This does little for the misery caused though. :(

Alternatively, as New Zealanders intensely dislike being regulated by the Government, (the Nanny State and all that), perhaps the use of fireworks should be made compulsory. That way nobody would buy them anyway! :p

401957 2005-11-07 11:53:00 They should be banned for several reasons:

1. The huge number of people injured each year, many of the innocent bystanders.
2. The cost of attending firework related fires and other emergency calls. 200 calls in the Wellington area on Saturday alone.
3. Guy fawkes night is an archaic English tradition that was only started because Haloween had been banned and the people wanted some other excuse for a celebration. It's out dated and has nothing to do with our country.
4. There is not point in selling them two weeks before November 5th because people can't be relied on to wait until the prescrobed day to use them. When I was a kid I'm pretty sure that you could buy them any time, but most people waited until Nov 5th - it was just the kids that let them offf before. Now even the councils "celebrate" on any days that suits them. Why should the rest of us have to put up with the noise over a week or two?
5. You actually get a far better display when the professionals do it.

401958 2005-11-07 19:27:00 Haloween has nothing to do with our country either & I think guy fawkes is a much better tradition. Greven (91)
