402350 2005-11-06 20:26:00 They are solderd in for reliability of connection and nothing more.
The environment and handling characteristics a razor is used for is not condusive to a spring clip arrangements, as corrosion can easily occur.

And although they say NiCd only, I am sure that NiMh would be usually be just fine in most cases. The 2000 mAh would take longer to charge but would last longer. The terminal voltage is the same.

Jaycar have 600 mAh NiCd at $3.50 each, probably the same capacity as already fitted.

402351 2005-11-07 01:59:00 They lasted from July 1996 .

Seems a good candidate for soldered in cells . That's far more reliable than any holder .

Do you believe your fancy new technology telephones, IPods, etc, will last that long, let alone the fancier batteries in them?

402352 2005-11-07 04:34:00 Speedy, I have replaced the 1/2 size C cell nicads in my shaver twice, last time was only a month ago. Here are the contact details (found via Google):

Shaver Shop <shaved@shavershop.co.nz>
.....sorry dont have the URL but Google it.

Ross Keen - Manager
(don't speak with Linda - she sent the incorrect cells to me)

Telephone
(09) 379 2005 (answer phone after hours)
Free phone (NZ only) 0800 SHAVED (742833)

Fax (09) 309 0292

Ross (and another guy) are very helpful and they don't mind if you want to install the cells yourself but they can do it for you.

Another bonus (or not, as you call it) is that the shop is located right next to SuperCheap Computers, on Pitt Street, Auckland, close to Karangahape Rd.

..............

BTW, my Philips shaver has been going strong since 1986, only replacing the batteries twice and only one of three of the cutting heads.

402353 2005-11-07 06:07:00 Thanx for that Steve . I'll check it out, yup this is the 1st time the batteries have had to be replaced, and the heads havent been changed since I brought it .

Might pay them a visit . I'm not too far from there .

The url is the same, just found it .

402354 2005-11-07 07:10:00 Thats the one Steve . Sent an email to Shavershop, and got a reply .

$31 . 20 for the 2 batteries .

Or $80 for the PCB . 1100 ma 1 hr batteries, which they import, compared to the original batteries, which are only 800 .

Thanx again for the info!

402355 2005-11-07 21:17:00 If they are AA, then tag types are all that they are. You can get NiCd but NiMh will be just fine (I have done this change) as the charger requirements are similar. Probably 600 mAh, so 2000 mAh will last a lot longer. The 96-07 is the date. The 2 cells in series give 2.4v.

If you cant get at the soldered connections under the board, cut them off and solder the new ones to the remaining tags. Just don't cook the batteries with too much heat when soldering.

Batteries should only be about $7-$8 for 2400 mAh at Jaycar
Am I missing something here?
Is there a difference that matters between the Jaycar jobbies and the $80 one's Speed is looking at?

402356 2005-11-07 23:42:00 The $80 is for the circuit board and the batteries, not the batteries by themselves .

Since one end of the batteries are / have to be soldered to the board .

The $31 is for the 2 batteries .

Which is the option, I may take, since the board I have is working . The shop just needs to solder the batteries I buy to the PCB . . . Since I dont have a soldering iron atm .

I've got 2100ma 1 . 2v batteries, and the charger for them, but wld rather use them in the digital cam, than the shaver .

If Jaycar has 1/2 size C cell nicads, then it is worth a try if it works out cheaper than $31. Speedy, soldering irons are not expensive - SuperCheap Auto has them for about ten bucks. I soldered the first set myself, then last month The Shaver Shop bloke said he would solder the two together for no charge. It is easy to solder the wires that connect to the circuit board.

Actually, I had thought about trying to source 1/2 size C cell nicads but thought they would not be available from places like Jaycar and DSE. Maybe they are available...

BTW, the charge lasted for a full 4 weeks, shaving once a day. I always keep using the shaver for a few days beyond the time the Beep Beep Beep low battery indicator. This is to ensure the nicads get a full charge. Next year my shaver will be 20 yrs old and ranks as one of the best electronic items I have ever bought.

[Edit] Forgot to mention that The Shaver Shop has parking down the drive to the left of the shop. This is shared parking with SuperCheap Computers. There is also metered parking on Pitt Street.

Stupid reply button didnt want to come up, so I had to quote!

Yup, not to worried bout car parking. I dont drive. I'll just catch a bus, outside that hotel, whatever its called just past K Road. And walk down.

Yer I know, I'm just crappy at soldering  Its not my best skill!

Yup thats what the guy said via email, last night, just bring the PCB in.

I could go to Jaycars, I just cant be stuffed walking that far from here to Boston Rd  I walked there enough, when I used to work in Boston Rd.

And no buses usually go that way.
