402462 2005-11-07 04:09:00 Ok... I was wondering if someone could tell me whether the sunbeam crockpot is oven safe... I mean, the pot and lid, not the whole thing!

Have tried looking online but nothing for that brand.

Could someone who's tried using it in an oven let me know? I don't really want to spend money on buying an oven safe pot when I might already have one!

402463 2005-11-07 04:23:00 The Sunbeam Crockpot that I have used for years is perfectly safe.
However as it has it's own power supply. why would one want to put it in the oven?

402464 2005-11-07 05:03:00 Depends on the temperature. Its certainly safe at the temperature used in the croc pot holder, and there will certainly be a margin of error but you neglect to say what what temperature range you will be using in the oven. godfather (25)
402465 2005-11-07 05:38:00 If you're talking about ONLY putting the earthenware parts in the oven . . . yes they are safe . . . I even have put them in microwaves . . . but never put the heating element or the outer cover into any heat source other than using it as designed .

The glass lid is safe too in the oven . . . or else it would not be safe when heated by the electric element either . Since the earthenware crock is fired and glazed, one can believe that there's no water inside it to expand and crack the pottery . That's the real problem with crockery . . . if it has a water content . . . it's not safe to microwave . It would not be well-glazed or completely glazed either .

We get a lot of Mexican "junk" here in Socal that is very dangerous to even put food in cold . They use lead in their glazes as they don't get the heat up enough for a real glaze . If one puts an acid-based food in the container, the lead leaches out and gives you a good dose of a very poisonous and dangerous heavy metal .

Even the Mexican candies are colored with powdered lead oxide for the kiddies to eat . . . and they use lead perborate as a teething poltace to help infants cut their teeth . Just crazy .

402466 2005-11-07 09:15:00 Re the handle on top of the glass lid, wouldn't the extreme heat from a red hot glowing oven element be too much for it?

In normal crock-pot usage it is far removed from the direct heat of the element.

402467 2005-11-07 18:53:00 Yes the the pottery parts are fine in the oven. Mine came with a pottery lid as well as a plastic one. Don't put the plastic one in the oven but you would know that already.

I wouldn't use it at too high temperatures for long cooking.

402468 2005-11-08 08:54:00 Temperatures would be no higher than 180 deg celsius . . . People I've talked to tell me it's safe to use in the oven at that sort of temp .

Mine has the 'tempered glass lid'

Any further thoughts?

Lo .

I bought my Sunbeam Crockpot in 2003 . It has a tempered glass lid with a round black knob handle on top . In use, the handle never gets too hot to lift with a bare hand, however I only use low heat for about 10 hours . The tempered glass lid gets too hot to touch though, so that proves that the handle is doing its insulating job ok . As I have never used the high setting I don't know how hot it would get in that mode .

I would not be prepared to subject mine to direct oven heat . Surely the handle knob would get extremely hot and beyond its designed temperature tolerance . I suppose it could be worth a try if spare parts are available and not too costly . I would liken it to putting a stainless steel cooking pot complete with black handle in the oven . How would it fare?

Perhaps you could phone their Sunbeam Consumer Hotline . The number will be in the instruction booklet . The number in their booklet for a kettle is; (09)912 0747 for NZ, I guess its the same number for questions about their stockpots .

Cheers .

402470 2005-11-08 10:54:00 Hmmm... my tempered glass lid is solid glass, no plastic on it whatsoever... I'll give them a call to check it out.

Cheers,

Lo.

There is no knob on the lid?

I can't say that I have ever been asked a question about whether the crock in a slow cooker is oven safe or not at work. I'll have to watch out for when that question comes up.
