1427830 2016-10-25 09:17:00 Have a laptop connected to a D-Link G604T with DHCP enabled. It has given the laptop an ip address of 123.234.123.233 with a default gateway of 123.234.123.1 - mygateway1.ar7

This IP address traces to China but the wan IP reports to be a local Spark address when doing a whatismyip check.

I also believe this is an internal dns setting in a D-Link modem (made in China) so at this stage think this is a modem dying. Windows event log shows a few DNS errors.

Just wondering what others think or anyone had past experience with this?

Besides dropping off the internet now and again it's working OK.

1427831 2016-10-25 20:19:00 Wow, the 604T goes back aways.

What is the DHCP range in the modem set to?

Also, make sure it has the default admin password changed.

1427832 2016-10-25 20:21:00 Worst case : you router has been hacked
more likely : the Dlink is using an unusual IP subnet . mygateway1.ar7 is the DLINK (according to google)
Either reset or replace that Dlink .

Also
check the PC's DNS : ipconfig /all
check the DNS entered into the Dlink
change the default admin password on the Dlink
change(check) the routers IP/DHCP settings . Usually are something like 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x

your DNS should be Telecoms DNS, or you could change it to google's DNS etc.
Hacked routers will have a DNS pointing to bogus DNS servers

1427833 2016-10-25 20:28:00 Probably get a new modem, regardless of this issue. :p wratterus (105)
1427834 2016-10-25 22:23:00 Thanks for the responses. I'm going to replace the modem as it is old. I cannot access the modem as password is not the default so but even though it could be hacked I guess it's more likely failing.

ipconfig /all shows the ip address as above with .1 as default gateway. The modems web interface responses to 123.234.123.1 but password is not default but guess it was changed by old IT guy.

Cheers

1427835 2016-10-25 23:37:00 Isn't there a "factory default" reset switch on that range of D-Link equipment (via a paperclip-sized hole)? You should be able to restore defaults (including admin password) & set the local LAN IP to something a bit more conventional. MushHead (10626)
1427836 2016-10-26 09:56:00 MushHead - yes there is but the modem is old and at this stage believe to be failing and why it is using the ip addresses that it is - hence has been replaced. Was never configured with that IP range. berryb (99)
