| 1427344 | 2016-10-12 21:58:00 | Is there such a thing as a modem which will automatically reboot if the connection is lost? Our Orcon NF4V Genius seems to regularly experience dropouts, which usually isn't too much of a hassle, except if we are away, in which case the security company loses the ability to monitor our alarm. In this case we are paying for something we are not getting, through no fault of the security company. | Richard (739) | ||

| 1427347 | 2016-10-13 23:23:00 | A few things here: 1) The NF4V are prone to doing stupid things like crashing under load, which is why I stopped recommending them a while back and halted giving them to customers some 18-odd months ago now. Look at replacements maybe? 2) Find out about how the alarm reconnects back to the alarm monitoring company, ask them for the technical details, see if you can help fine-tune the router to better accomodate that 3) Find out why it's actually crashing. Is it your DSL line? Is it the router getting warm? Dying under load? |

| 1427348 | 2016-10-15 04:25:00 | Thanks for the replies. Reasons for the disconnects are really rather moot from my position of technical ability, and could be caused by Orcon, Chorus, or even power "blips". What I really would like to know is should the modem or router (whichever it is) reconnect automatically? I can find nowhere in the setup to turn this feature on or off, so don't know. Chill. The alarm company installed a new black box into our alarm system when we went over to UFB, which connects into the modem/router, and this works well as long as we remain on-line, so I don't feel the responsibility is theirs. The only way I am able to fix the off-line problem is to power off and repower the NF4V. While this NF4V belongs to Orcon, I don't feel like running out and buying another, which may not fix the problem. With normal domestic load, I can't see overload being the cause of the dropouts, which while infrequent, are annoying. |

Maybe if you can endure/navigate the Orcon Support you should raise the matter with them and ask for another modem. Of course they will ask you to switch it on and off and reset etc etc etc which people will have done umpteen times before they bite the bullet to contact them with a problem :) |
