1424774 2016-08-23 02:08:00 I am a steam train enthusiast and love watching videos of steam trains but there are many steam train videos from America which ruin the soundtrack with the ringing of a bell. It's infuriating and has put me off watching American steam train videos. :(

But why do they have a bell? I have noticed that they only seem to ring the bell while they are in the railway yards, not out on the main line. Why not? Or more to The point, why do they need to have a bell at all? And why don't any other countries have bells on their locomotives?

Sheer bliss, steam trains and 1920s music combined....www.youtube.com

1424779 2016-08-23 04:49:00 Google gives several sites that say in the US and Canada bells are required by law, and when they are to be used..........All aboard ;) Terry Porritt (14)
1424780 2016-08-23 06:50:00 I hate bells on American trains too. I guess they have them because trains are pretty quiet at low speeds... pcuser42 (130)
1424781 2016-08-23 10:32:00 They probably have them for the same reasons that some vehicles in NZ have those @#^^! reversing horns.
To hose people off. :badpc:
