1424523 2016-08-22 04:21:00 You shouldn’t need to chlorinate Drinking Water continuously.

It should be done on a need basis and most Water Treatment Plant’s have worked that way for years.

If you do have to continuously chlorinate, then you must have an awful source and the problem needs to be addressed at that point.
It all depends on the source of the water, if it is river water such as the Hutt River from the Tararuas before the confluence with the Pakuratahi, then the treatment plant at Te Marua continuously chlorinates at an appropriate level.

If you live in lower Hutt and get water from the aquifer, then it isn't chlorinated.

However the lower reaches of the Hutt River recharge the aquifer, so if river pollution increases and it gets into the aquifer then there could be a Havelock North replay.

The Hutt over the last 20 years or so has had toxic algae problems with poisonous mats of cyanobacta forming, dogs have been killed and warning notices are put up every year.

The toxic algae forms only downstream of the Mangaroa river confluence, so the inference is nutrients feeding the small amount of cyanobacta naturally present and coming from farms in the Mangaroa/Whiteman valley area, though housing has also increased. 30+ years ago when we first came here there was no toxic algae. (that caused any problems)

1424524 2016-08-22 06:23:00 I have scuba dived there in the seventies, our dive club came from Blenheim. No biggie then just pull up and dive in, then a few quieties afterwards. Followed by a few rowdy ones and then a drunken drive to the Globe Hotel and stay the night.
Water was obscenely clear used to diving in murky Pelorus and Queen Charlotte Sounds.
I think the blacks have stopped people from even swimming there now which we used to do when I was at school in Motueka.

Yes, the source of the water is all important and the rest of the hype is just that, hype.

If you move away from drinking water, our harbour in Tauranga is now full of Sea Lettuce and some are making a big deal of it, the Shell Fish beds are closed because of deadly toxins, and on it goes. But those of us who have ignored the warnings have never fell ill. :)

I can remember when Cambridge pumped its Sewerage RAW into the Waikato River.

People took water out downstream and when it got to Hamilton the Waikato Hospital discharged their Settling Ponds into the river.

Then a mile or so on, Hamilton took its Drinking Water out of the river.

But wait, only a couple of hundred yards further on the old Waikato Breweries took their water out and made Waikato XXXX, and that did make you sick. ;)

1424526 2016-08-22 09:56:00 If Waikato beer made you sick you're not a real man. Just saying. Was awesome, you could take a crate to a party and set it down and nobody would steal any.
Now it's basically Lion Red with a slightly different flavour.

Apparently these days the only thing in the Waikato river that exceeds recommended levels for safe consumption (before treatment) is arsenic, and that comes naturally from Lake Taupo. Of course it's a little hard to believe looking at the water, I certainly wouldn't drink it. We do tend to get a bit of Giardia in it from time to time as well and that's not pleasant.

Yep no one is allowed into the water at all anymore

1424528 2016-08-22 21:12:00 And, my point, is no-one has a water problem, until suddenly they do.

Cleaning it after is not helpful and does not prevent illness.

My mum boils hers because prevention is better than cure.

"Cryptosporidium is highly resistant to chlorine, so residents need to keep boiling their water until it's given the all-clear - which could take some time."
"While it only takes a few days for campylobacter to make a person sick, Hawke's Bay District Health Board chief executive Kevin Snee says it can take up to 20 days for cryptosporidium to make its present felt."

1424531 2016-08-24 04:16:00 Some people think that water from a bore or spring is pure, far from it. Not only can bugs get into it from the surface, but they can survive for a very long time.
I see no problem in only drinking boiled water, no matter where it comes from. It tastes better as well. My son does not have a town water supply, and relies on rain water. All the water is filtered and exposed to Ultra Violet light. He also boils his drinking water.
