1424503 2016-08-20 07:21:00  I had no idea that a DNA test could tell what you’ve been dining out on, especially in the case of a bacteria. :lol:The reports don't say which species of Campylobacter, but the most common species to infect humans is Campylobacter jejuni. Certain strains of C. jejuni (and other species) are more associated particular types of animals. They can sequence the bacterial DNA looking for specific gene markers which can be used to identify and trace the source of the contamination. So while the DNA testing cannot tell what the bacteria have been dining out on, it can show which "restaurant/s" they most likely visited. Jen (38)

So let me see if I understand this.

Are you saying that Scientists captured a Campylobacter Bacteria, skinned it alive, and unwound its double helix looking for directions to a Crap restaurant?

Unfortunately, the crap restaurant doesn’t have Wi-Fi to help their tracking, so they are still aimlessly looking.

They can compare the gene markers between the bacteria isolated from the water/patients with any Campylobacter isolated at suspected sites/sources. It may turn out that a few sites have the same Campylobacter strains so it will be interesting to see how close they can narrow it down to.

I am surprised that only Campylobacter is implicated, as with water contamination you can also get Giardia or Cryptosporidium.

So they can shift the blame to someone else and take attention away from their lack of treatment.

Who do you mean by 'they' ? The scientists doing the dna measurements ?
That view doesn't rate their integrity very highly !

On the other hand political pressures and the attitude of denial by such as Federated Farmers should not be underestimated

1424509 2016-08-21 07:52:00 Are you obsessed about this pctek. Worry about Auckland water. It may not poison you but it probably tastes like shite as it always has. At least with Havelock North water you get value for money. :clap

Nothing much wrong with the Auckland water. At least it's treated not like the 3rd world of Havelock North water..

1424512 2016-08-21 09:51:00 I am a born and bred Aucklander in willing exile here in Napier. Our water is free and tastes beautiful (we pay a set amount in our rates for it). It comes from a different place than H/N stuff. Auckland water tasted awful when I lived there 50 odd years ago. Every visit since made me realise it still tasted awful. Sorry Paul
