1424493 2016-08-19 20:47:00 I see in tonites news that Christchurch does not treat their water as well , due to cost they say . .
I tried to find a list of which councils do and which don't . Couldn't but the search showed loads don't .

Cost?? Watercare passes the cost to us users . They seem to do alright with their finances .

It's just pathetic, the world has been doing this for well over a 100 years, it was what stopped all the deaths . . . and NZ decides it doesn't need to? Oh yes, clean, green NZ .

Green = cow poo .

Wiki:
Campylobacteriosis, a gastrointestinal infection caused by Campylobacter, is characterized by inflammatory, sometimes bloody diarrhea or dysentery syndrome, mostly including cramps, fever, and pain . The most common routes of transmission are fecal-oral, ingestion of contaminated food or water, and the eating of raw meat . Foods implicated in campylobacteriosis include raw or under-cooked poultry, raw dairy products, and contaminated produce .

The sites of tissue injury include the jejunum, the ileum, and the colon . Most strains of C jejuni produce a toxin (cytolethal distending toxin) that hinders the cells from dividing and activating the immune system . This helps the bacteria to evade the immune system and survive for a limited time in the cells . The organism produces diffuse, bloody, edematous, and exudative enteritis .

Campylobacter infection is now known as the single most identifiable antecedent infection associated with the development of GBS .

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a problem with the nervous system . It causes muscle weakness, loss of reflexes, and numbness or tingling in your arms, legs, face, and other parts of your body . This rare condition can cause paralysis and lead to death .

1424494 2016-08-19 21:04:00 Waterborne diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms that most commonly are transmitted in contaminated fresh water. Infection commonly results during bathing, washing, drinking, in the preparation of food, or the consumption of food thus infected. Various forms of waterborne diarrheal disease probably are the most prominent examples; according to the World Health Organization, such diseases cause about 1.5 million human deaths annually. The World Health Organization estimates that 58% of deaths per year, is attributable to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene.

Amoebiasis (hand-to-mouth) Sewage, non-treated drinking water, flies in water supply
Cryptosporidiosis (oral) Collects on water filters and membranes that cannot be disinfected, animal manure, seasonal runoff of water.
Cyclosporiasis Sewage, non-treated drinking water
Giardiasis (fecal-oral) (hand-to-mouth) Untreated water, poor disinfection, pipe breaks, leaks, groundwater contamination, campgrounds where humans and wildlife use same source of water. Beavers and muskrats create ponds that act as reservoirs for Giardia.
Microsporidiosis Encephalitozoon intestinalis has been detected in groundwater, the origin of drinking water [6]
Taeniasis Drinking water contaminated with eggs
Fasciolopsiasis Drinking water contaminated with encysted metacercaria
Hymenolepiasis (Dwarf Tapeworm Infection) Drinking water contaminated with eggs
Echinococcosis (Hydatid disease) Drinking water contaminated with feces (usually canid) containing eggs
Ascariasis Drinking water contaminated with feces (usually canid) containing eggs
Enterobiasis Drinking water contaminated with eggs
Botulism Can enter the gastrointestinal tract through consumption of contaminated drinking water or food
Campylobacteriosis Drinking water contaminated with feces
Cholera Drinking water contaminated with the bacterium
E. coli Infection Water contaminated with the bacteria
M. marinum infection Naturally occurs in water
Dysentery Water contaminated with the bacterium
Legionellosis (two distinct forms: Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever) Contaminated water: the organism thrives in warm aquatic environments.
Leptospirosis Water contaminated by the animal urine carrying the bacteria
Salmonellosis Drinking water contaminated with the bacteria.
Typhoid fever Ingestion of water contaminated with feces of an infected person
Vibrio Illness Can enter wounds from contaminated water. Also acquired by drinking contaminated water or eating undercooked oysters.
SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) Manifests itself in improperly treated water
Hepatitis A Can manifest itself in water (and food)
Poliomyelitis (Polio) Enters water through the feces of infected individuals
Polyomavirus infection Very widespread, can manifest itself in water

1424495 2016-08-19 22:34:00 The DNA tests which had just been released were said on the news tonight to be most likely stock, not bird or human.

 I had no idea that a DNA test could tell what you’ve been dining out on, especially in the case of a bacteria.

1424496 2016-08-19 22:36:00 Have you not heard of siphoning Prefect?

You loose water pressure and what's in the trough siphons back into the system.

Hoses left running in Swimming Pools are good at it too. ;)

Syphons do not work through air. We are not talking a hose in a trough, troughs almost always have ballcock vlaves and there is air under them

Well, we don't get a "water bill" here either (yet) - it's (currently still) covered by rates.

Do you take antibiotics daily? (based on the same theory) - or only when/if there is a problem?

That reasoning is BS of the first order..........THINK as IBM would say.

Something not yet considered or seen in the press is whether the sewage treatment at Havelock North can cope with being inundated with campylobacta from the 4000 or so infected people. Does the treatment kill off the bugs, if not, or not completely, where does the effluent end up ?

 Only "Queen Street Farmers" would mount their trough ballcocks at the top of a trough where the stock can smash them and you lose all your water.

The rest put the valve and arm at the bottom of the trough out of the way and attach the float by a cord.

Hence they fit oneway valves to stop any back flow in the case of a break or leak somewhere in the reticulation which is often shared by the house.

1424500 2016-08-20 00:37:00 Interesting post on Facebook from a person whose wife went down with campylobacter in July before the current outbreak, and then developed GBS.

So you DO have a water bill, it's just part of the rates like Aucklands used to be.
But you don't get anything other than delivery of the water, we at least get germ free water.

That's a stupid analogy, I don't need antibiotics because I haven't caught one of the numerous filthy infections as above, because the water is treated.

And the chlorine doesn't stay in the water actually...it dissipates. That's mainly why it's done at night, to allow enough time for the germs to be killed.

You go ahead and drink **** happily then, doesn't bother me what you do.

Interesting indeed, but my guess is the only way we peasants will ever find the truth is if someone “Spills the Beans”.

In the meantime, the Spin Doctors will blame the Cows and the Greens will insist that all Cows be fitted with Colostomy Bags.
