My guess is that given the weather they had experienced prior to the trouble, their Sewerage System was overwhelmed by Stormwater at some stage and the cocktail of effluent leached into the water system somewhere.

Remember why farmers put one way valves on their Water Troughs. ;)

Why would you? How can the water travel back up through the air to get back into the ballcock valve that is used on a water trough?. If some water magically jumped up to the valve it would be pushed back by the water pressure going to the valve.
Bit stupid blaming stock its more likely human effluent that has got in.

1424486 2016-08-19 07:55:00 I see in tonites news that Christchurch does not treat their water as well , due to cost they say. Just takes this sort of thing to happen and the cost of Chlorinating your water is small compared to the fallout. paulw (1826)

Heard on Radio Live closest cow 12kms from water source. Some people live on tank water which is full of bird droppings from the roof, I have seen dead possums and rats in water tanks and the family has been fine. I have seen dead cows, etc in water reservoirs and creeks leading to them with no sickness from the family drinking from them. The water supply at our farm was there when Dad was a kid and he is 92 it consisted of a drum up a hill, nothing to see dead eels and crayfish in it.
I do not believe its from stock. Bugger the DNA test.

Have you not heard of siphoning Prefect?

You loose water pressure and what's in the trough siphons back into the system.

Hoses left running in Swimming Pools are good at it too. ;)

The cows are getting the early spring growth and they're on the verge of getting bloat. This means the cows innards are making methane, and that goes out the usual way, mixed with a lot of liquid. This is a high methane fuel if you will, and if it accumulates in any pockets or cavities underground, you have a potentially explosive situation underfoot. It only takes a couple of these subterranean events and you have agrarian fracking. This is going to put the cow stuff well and truly through the water table, and we then have as much crap in the groundwater as we have in Hansard.
