1427214 2016-10-11 21:14:00 Win defender wont scan incoming emails . I dont think Avira Free scans incoming email either .
That should be the no.1 in what you look for in AV, email scanning. You'd be surprised just how many people still get malware through infected emails.
And its the very nastiest stuff coming though in email (crypto) .
You also want AV that will monitor web browsing & block known infected/suspicious Websites .

And MS consumer AV has a long history of poor performing AV products, going way way back . Every now & then MS AV will get a kick in the bum & be quite up to date in its detection, then a few months later, back to the same old .

Hi 1101. Just curious about getting an infection via an email - can that ONLY happen if you click on a malicious link within an email or download a malicious attachment? Or can you be infected by simply reading an email? (Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question!)

used to once be , supposedly even having the email in the preview plane was enough. Thats changed now though (I assume) .
Usually have to open attachment or click on link, but those who do so often wont admit to what they've done , or cant remember

But who knows what other security holes those malicious emails can use . Especially on insecure, unpatched email programs

1427217 2016-10-12 05:00:00 Ah thanks 1101. I think I should be OK. I read most emails in plain text, don't enable pictures, and I only open attachments from people/places I know and trust after I've saved and scanned them first. I don't click on links unless I'm sure they're going to go where they say and I know the site.

I haven't enabled email scanning on this rig because I've had loads of problems with getting email scanners and email clients to play nicely, and stay that way after programme updates. Gave up in the end...
