1426925 2016-10-05 00:07:00 At home I have a PC (without screen or keyboard) that I connect to via Remote Desktop from my old laptop. Both PC and old laptop are running Windows 10 Pro. Just bought a new laptop, which has Windows 10 Home. When I try to connect from new laptop to PC it does its thing and looks like it's working, but I can never actually do anything when the window opens - sometimes I can see some items on my PC desktop, but usually most of the screen is just black (within the Remote connection window).

Is there something about W10 Home that would make it not connect via RDP? Or is it likely a setting somewhere?

There is no special connections (that I'm aware of) in between. Both laptops via WiFi to the router, PC via ethernet cable to same router. All three are logged in using the same microsoft account.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get it working?

Cheers,
Mike.

1426926 2016-10-05 00:22:00 Should be no difference between the old laptop, being Pro, and the new laptop, being Home.
You can even get the Microsoft Remote Desktop app for iOS and Android devices, so you could connect from one of them to your desktop.

Have you rebooted the desktop?

1426927 2016-10-05 00:29:00 Have you rebooted the desktop? Yes, several times, as well as the laptop. All are fully updated too.

It seems to connect OK (no errors) and starts to display, but nothing or very little from the windows desktop on the PC actually displays on my laptop.

Cheers,
Mike.

Yes the old laptop still connects and works perfectly - never had any issues with it.

1426930 2016-10-05 00:47:00 Hmmm could be the antivirus / firewall software on the new laptop perhaps.
Is there anything on there or just Windows Defender?

1426931 2016-10-05 01:07:00 Well after 3 days of frustration it's just started working normally (and made no changes from when it wasn't working...)

Although I'm happy it's working, it's still kind of annoying as no idea what the cause was or if it'll happen again. I guess you'll hear from me here if it does. Thanks for the suggestions though CYaBro, it's appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike.

1426932 2016-10-05 02:10:00 it's just started working normally (and made no changes from when it wasn't working...)Wouldn't be at all surprised if the problem was the computer updating. Even a brand new computer can be months out of date. Most of the times certain functions can be affected.

Rule :1 new name brand computers - remove all junk antivirus software - 2. Manually run all updates. (this can easily take several hours).

Saw one HP laptop only about 3 weeks ago, Guy got it from Harvey Norman, running really slow, still on W10 version 10240 - very first version out.

Could well have been - when I got the laptop (only last Friday) I manually ran the updates and also manually downloaded and installed the anniversary update (and then ran the updates again). I haven't uninstalled the McAfee or whatever is installed - looks like it's only valid for a month so I'll remove it and put Avast back on (have been happy with that on the old lappy and PC for a while)

Thanks for the comments - I'll keep an eye on that if it happens again.

Cheers,
Mike.

1426934 2016-10-05 08:57:00 I have had that happen a few times. Randomly shows a black or partial screen. Not often and normally comes right. I normally put it down to graphics not adjusting to the screen size of the new connection. As I access from different machines it seems to sort itself after connecting from a different machine. berryb (99)
