1425057 2016-08-28 04:46:00 Two things.

One, I was told that it is not a good idea to tow a broken down car with an auto transmission unless a short distance and at low speed.

Two, is it possible to tow a similar car to get the engine going. If so how?

1425058 2016-08-28 07:48:00 one, yes
two, no

i don't know if anything has changed over the years in that regards.
mind you this is with normal auto types, not automatic manuals or CVT.

Did do a big search on Google but the results were so inconclusive. Some say yes, some say no, some say it depends on the type of transmission.
Got an old Mazda 626 that no matter what we have tried it wont start. In the bad old day as a youngster when we had this sort of problems towing the vehicle at speed down the road usually instigated some sort of response from the engine. That's with a gearbox.
Auto is a different kettle of fish. My thoughts are that if I could turn the engine over on the starter while towing in gear there may be enough oil getting to the torque converter to keep the engine turning over.

1425060 2016-08-28 21:28:00 In the bad old days with rear wheel drive it was easy enough in a pinch to unbolt the drive shaft and wire it up out of the way to let you tow your car home (I may have blown an engine or 3 in my youth).
I was always under the impression that tow starting was possible but very bad for the gearbox and that towing in general should be avoided.

Here's one for the health and safety nuts, I remember tow starting my first car with the bonnet up and my older brother perched underneath making adjustments as we went along. A little bit of insanity, but it worked.

These days I would recommend taking it to a mechanic if you can't get it started, engines and transmissions are a lot more complicated than they were in my youth and you run the risk of doing more harm than good. A decent mechanic should be able to give you a price just to investigate what the problem is and then you can decide whether to pay to have it fixed or try it yourself. I don't even change my own oil any more, hard enough to find the filter let alone reach it.

1425062 2016-08-29 07:42:00 My old neigbour got rich on his automatic trans shop in Henderson, too good to live in Glen Eden and moved to Orewa. He started a shop there is rolling in it again. prefect (6291)

certainly not with older models.
just going to have to sort the starting system and what ever is wrong with it.

modern auto's are a lot better than they used to be.
but i think there is still some issues. primarily its lack of servicing. mechanics can be just as bad as drivers in short cutting the servicing.
2nd is cooling especially if you tow or have heavy loads.

CVT's are another story again. probably ok for small cars that have no weight.

one issue now is manuals don't have enough gears. at best you only get a 6 speed manual. 7-8 speed auto's are not uncommon now.
i would love a 5 speed with split shift in the ute :)
