677281 2008-06-10 11:14:00 I have a Toshiba Satellite M30 running XP Pro (SP2).

Can anyone advise how I can make the DVD drive region-free?

Software (free, preferably) or registry hack...

I could reformat, but that's only a temporary fix and a PITA...

677282 2008-06-10 11:20:00 I dont think it'll matter if you format anyway

If you've changed the region so many times, it'll still be there after you format.

You could either flash the DVD with a DVD region free update (which may kill it)

I cant remember the programs you can use. I use DVD X player, but its not free.

677283 2008-06-10 11:58:00 I think that VLC doesn't give a stuff about DVD regions... It (I think) plays DVD's of any region, no matter what the region of the drive is set to :) Sherman (9181)
677284 2008-06-10 12:42:00 VLC will let you play DVD's without worry of the DVD region.

There is also this site (http://forum.rpc1.org/) with firmware. Whether yours exist is another q.

677286 2008-06-10 22:46:00 Cheers for all the replies guys - found a forum that had a 4 year old thread with people getting hotter and hotter under the collar that Matsu****a wasn't playing ball in releasing a firmware upgrade for the UJ-820S DVD-RAM (the model I have in my laptop). The thread ended with one of the experienced firmware 'hackers' throwing up his hands in disgust and giving up!! :D

However the suggestion by Sherman (VLC) seems to have done the trick. Thank god for Open Source software!!!!

Thanks everyone.
