2008-06-09 01:15:00 | I recently upgraded AVG 7.5 Free to V8.0. Seemed OK at first but found a lot of what it termed spyware which it moved to a virus vault automatically. (I looked the list over and the names looked dodgy enough, I was surprised that Spyware Doctor hadn't picked them up but since they were going to a vault I figured I could get them back if I needed to, DUH!) Next bootup my desktop appeared normal, but clicking on anything just leaves me with the eggtimer. Lockup from there, had to power down. Went in as Administrator, seemed OK at first and went to restore point before AVG, it seemed to be working but went into repeated reboots. Tried to do a restore from Acronis backup, OK intil it shut itself down..more reboots. Safe mode innaccesible, more automatic reboots. Currently can get no further than desktop in any user. A workmate has also had to reformat two machines since updating to AVG 8.0Have tried their forums but they seem to be in denial despite many complaints being out there. Any ideas how to at least get system running? I'm trying to slipstream a disk with my original (no SP) CD and SP3 so I can attempt a repair. I'd like to make a new backup or save anything valuable before I do a reformat. P4 @3.2, 2G ram, C drive is 2 WD 36G Raptors, raid 0 XP Pro patched to SP3 Thanks

2008-06-09 01:16:00 | AVG 8.0 Free and Paid versions have issues. AVG 8.0 Free is rather horrible, and all version have CPU usage issues, not unlike nortons. Also it deletes files, like system files. Have had similar issues to you. :( Used to be a decent product, like nortons.... Does safe mode work? (tap f8 on startup). You should be able to remove it, then do a chkdsk /r from the command line. For free AV, install Avast Home.

2008-06-09 01:27:00 | Tapping F8 gives the safe mode dialog but whichever one is used the PC goes through it's startup routine, then straight back into a reboot, last known good config just leaves me with my unusable desktop, Windows obviously thinks that's OK. Ctrl.Alt.Del doesn't work so I don't know what is running. | Krafty (13849) | |

2008-06-09 01:35:00 | If you have used system restore, try this, To run the restore from command prompt - 1. Boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt – Keep Pressing F8 at start-up then with the arrow keys select Safe mode with Command prompt. 2. At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Press Enter. - use restore as per normal. Take it back to the day before or the day you installed it, try and report back if anything happened. William

2008-06-09 02:05:00 | What are you trying to say? It use to be crap? Both AVG and Nortons were a decent product back in the day. Both of them have never been the best on the market, but they have both gone far downhill.
