Mr Peters arrives for the Apec (Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation) meeting in Pusan, South Korea, today along with Trade Ministers Phil Goff and Jim Sutton . The New Zealand First leader has a popular image of being anti-immigration and in particular anti-Asian immigration, but he says this is misconstrued and is concerned about the decline in the number of Chinese students studying English in New Zealand over the past few years . The collapse of some English language schools had been one of the factors behind the decline and Mr Peters was concerned that "New Zealand could do better" . "There was an irresponsible side of capitalism on export education . . . I regard that as a lessening of the obligation to China which we promised . I don't blame the Government for that . This was an industry that called for these changes, I think with hindsight . . . we could have monitored their performance more closely," he said . |

Walk up to him, hug him and call him Uncle! :D Personally if they are the younger generation of chinese students coming over that are in the decline, then GOOD. They are the ones that are putting the rest of us down! |

I cannot see any inconsistency between wanting to limit the number of immigrants to New Zealand which is already manifestly overpopulated, with wanting to spread the teaching of the English language to non-English speaking peoples. Though whether New Zealanders are really qualified to teach English, English spelling and pronunciation is altogether a moot point. :) |

" Kidnappings, fake licenses to drive here (got distant rellies who have one), gambling/extortion, total disregard for the rules, lots of money yada yada yada . Though not all of the younger generation are like that . But Damn I've seen a lot of them who are . . . :mad: Interesting to hear that from the viewpoint of another Asian, who has presumably been here a long time . . ? South Auckland born and bred :D And it aint as bad as the media portrays it . |

Gotta mix and mingle I beleive. We've all got good points. The world's going multicultural anyway, may as well pick out the good bits. |
