Surely you did not really think the high cost is due to the Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina, or research and development... From this article (www.wkyt.com) (and on National Radio news this morning.) CAPITOL HILL Top oil industry executives have the unenviable task this morning of explaining their record profits to two Senate committees. Those profits were racked up as motorists forked over three dollars a gallon. The executives will be asked to explain those record earnings and why they shouldn't donate some of it to seniors and low-income Americans having trouble paying their energy bills. The five companies to be represented at today's hearing posted roughly 25 (b) billion (USD) dollars in profits in the third quarter of the year. Some senators are calling for a windfall profits tax to help consumers get some of the money back. |
