676416 2008-06-08 01:50:00 Hi All,
Why does downloading a Microsoft product have to be so difficult and frustrating compared to downloading any other program
All I want to do is get Windows Mail and Messenger working.
Windows Mail works fine but I can not get Messenger to work

Every time I open it ,as soon as I try to sign on it then closes on me
I get a message saying that the "Data Exception Process" has closed Windows Live Messenger
Apparently this is Microsoft Vista protecting me from opening a Microsoft product

Microsoft help tells me I cam close DEP for a individual program.
When I go into Control Panel to do that I am then told that DEP for Microsoft Messenger can not be turned off

I have downloaded all sorts of programs on to my computer , never struck this before.
Any one know what is going on here

676417 2008-06-08 02:15:00 Because you have Vista. If you had XP you would be fine. vitalstatistix (9182)
676418 2008-06-08 02:34:00 Data Exception Process or Data Execution Process? I have never heard of the former... Renmoo (66)
676419 2008-06-08 02:46:00 You are getting Windows Live Messenger right? Not Windows Messenger which is only supported natively on XP and lower. beeswax34 (63)

If you cant help, Dont reply

To the others
It is Windows Live messanger that I downloaded
I got the name wrong of the process that is closing it down.
It is Data Execution Prevention.

Looks like there's 2 different patches, one is for Acers, the other for something else

676422 2008-06-08 03:56:00 OK Guys
Did a bit of research and discovered
forums.microsoft.com
That gave me a solution where "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff"
is entered into the command line.
It now works fine

In case any others have the same problem ,the MSDN forum seems to suggest that it mainly affects Acer machines. Acer is what I have.
It seems that it is caused by one of the helpful (read useless) programs that Acer preinstall on their machines
I often have been tempted to uninstall all those programs but have been a little bit wary in case something gets broken in Windows

676423 2008-06-08 03:59:00 Thanks Speedy,
Yep, thats the forum I just found
I just find it unsurprising that the thing that did not work on Vista is a
Microsoft program
