404148 2005-11-13 21:15:00 Is there any new avenues to buying a laptop I could be made aware of other than from the shop. Quite a lot of people <excluding the TM shops> seem to be selling new laptops below cost! ... namely 'refurbished Toshiba' models. Where do they get these? Am I able to get one for myself? ... then there is a few shop demos -got in contact with one who told me shops return their demo units back to supplier who then sell them to other shops to onsell to customers. Any way I could interfere in this process and just get one for cheaper?

Taking into account that success fees are deducted, how do they make money?

If anyone has avenues and is able to supply me with a cheap laptop, I'd be very grateful. Has to have 15.4" WXGA screen. Thanks,

404149 2005-11-13 21:37:00 As far as TradeMe is concerned, here are some words of warning for you: "You get what you pay for" .

It's all well and good to buy a laptop cheap, but when it comes to support, warranty issues, returns and faults, you'll regret not looking somewhere more reliable . A lot of those traders are based offshore (though they ship out of NZ) and are impossible to contact should you need help .

Most of those laptops are asian models (or at least they were when I was looking at them a while back), hence the lower price .

Have you thought about buying through a real auction? Turners etc often have auctions for laptops and other hardware, and you can get real bargains if you keep an eye out for them .

I got my Toshiba laptop from Noel Leemings, it was a shelf model and they knocked $500 off the price - you could always go in and ask them if they'll do the same for you .

404151 2005-11-13 21:59:00 GraysOnline seem to have cheap "ex-demo" or refurbished laptops for sale quite often. I've never bought from them though, so I don't know what they're like.

I don't understand why people bid there. By the time you add buyer's premium and shipping cost ("strictly no pickups" it says), then you're paying more for a refurbished one than you are for a brand new one still sealed in the box!

404153 2005-11-13 22:39:00 Ya, Grays are not a cheap outlet...... Metla (12)
404154 2005-11-13 22:56:00 lol, Greys are an auction crowd, its only exspencive when you bid too much! tweak'e (69)
404155 2005-11-13 23:11:00 No, They set the price high, and charge high fees.

At one time I scanned their listings daily, and never once saw a bargin, let alone something well priced.

Especially when you see the same items going for pennies through Turners.

404156 2005-11-13 23:19:00 May I ask when this was and what model was it?

This was around Christmas last year.. Toshiba A70 (the widescreen 15.4 WXGA model) P4-M 3.06Ghz, 1GB ram, 60GB HDD, DVDRW with extended 3 year warranty for $2995 (I think, it was a while ago).

It's always worth asking about the price of floor models. I did it with this laptop and also with most of my appliances (washing machine, fridge etc) which I got discounted between 10 and 40%.

Ah that makes sense -they probably took the discount off your extended warranty. Oh well, doesn't harm to ask does it. I'll talk to them about it later. Thanks for the suggestion.
