| 403547 | 2005-11-11 08:39:00 | There is a rumour that Novell have dumped the "boxed" SuSE distribution and will focus on the server market much like Red Hat did (and created Fedora). We will have to wait and see. Anyway, I just loaded Ubuntu 5.10 as I read it has a pretty good wireless card detection program. Well I didn't like it. I could only get my 19" monitor running at 60Hz which is disappointing for a pretty new release of a Linux disto. I found SuSe 9.2 on a dvd I had lying around and its pretty impressive. My monitor is running at 1400 x 1000 at 75Hz and the default font looks so good. Got Firefox running... life is good ;) |

| 403548 | 2005-11-11 10:19:00 | Bit of a vicious rumour that one. ;) SuSE/Novell (Novell Desktop) are just moving towards Gnome rather than KDE as the default desktop environment. This is apparently required so that they can grow the business in the direction they want to head in using their resources to the best advantage. KDE will still be maintained with the community OpenSuSE version. Very similiar to what Red Hat did when they stopped at Red Hat 9 and let the community work with and develop Fedora Core 1 (was to be Red Hat 10). Red Hat continues to work with their Enterprise versions and the free desktop version is led by the community. You can read Novells reply to this rumour here (www.eweek.com) |

| 403549 | 2005-11-11 21:12:00 | Well, guess where I go every day, www.linuxtoday.com, which they credit as the source of the rumour. Its funny actually as I tend to favour Gnome as my desktop but I didn't like Ubuntu's Gnome desktop and SuSE's KDE desktop is much more polished. If SuSe switchs to Gnome and retain the good looking desktop thats fine, but if it doesn't look as good, that would be a shame. (One of) the main Kernel developers is leaving SuSe and he stated "I just decided to leave Suse/Novell. This is not (any) longer the company I founded 13 years ago," Mantel said in the e-mail. "I have been the maintainer of the Suse kernel for more than a decade now. I'm very confident the Novell management will find a competent successor very quickly." Of course when a company like Novell buys a (presumably) small company like SuSE, you would expect changes in direction and "casulties". |
