678169 2008-06-13 20:46:00 I've been trying to install xp onto a 2nd hand Seagate 60gb HDD. I've FDISK'ed it, created C & D logical drives, rebooted between each change (as you do). Then lastly I've formatted each logical drive ready for the new OS.

However, every time I start loading the XP OS it gets so far then comes up with a 'blue screen' saying .... ERROR message 0x0000007B etc, etc.

I tried giving it a scandisk (I couldn't locate chkdsk) which performed beautifully - no bad sectors at all. Loaded sys file as I read somewhere that can be needed. Still no luck.

Last thing last night, when trying to load the OS for the 'umteenth' time the XP CD exploded in the drive!! Never had that happen before! I decided it wouldn't be safe to continue using the drive even if I did get all the fragments out. What a mission. Anyway, I had a DVD drive in this PC as well so will use that to load the OS (if possible).

Anyone know what the cause of the HDD error is or whether it can be fixed? I'm in DOS (at the A prompt) - loading any programs larger than 1.44mb is impossible - and most don't run in DOS anyway.
