677784 2008-06-12 06:10:00 When the laptop I am using is put on Standby and then restarted, a box appears: "What do you want Windows to do?" with the option of shutting down, or "Cancel" to use Windows XP.

How can this box be bypassed so that waking the laptop from Standby, it will go straight into Windows?

677785 2008-06-12 10:36:00 Its now 62 page views and over 4 hours after posting.

I did not think my question would stump PF1 for this long.

After a few google searches I found nothing so maybe it is a difficult question. I am not sure why this laptop (my wife's) has this situation - its not on my desktop.

677786 2008-06-12 10:38:00 From my experience what you're describing is not a normal thing to happen - can you post a screenshot (http://www.imagef1.net.nz)? jwil1 (65)

I cannot do a screenshot because with the box present Windows is not active - the desktop is gray.

The box says "Windows Shutdown" at the top, followed by this question: "What do you want windows to do?" + the options "Shut Down, Restart" and I think "Hibernate". Remember this occurs after being in standby mode (as the laptop 'wakes up' due to hitting the power button). What I do is to hit the CANCEL button. There is a HELP button but it does not help in this situation LOL, although hitting HELP and then canceling the Help box restores Windows to an active state.

I could do a digcam shot of it tomorrow, if necessary.

677789 2008-06-12 11:40:00 Does it look like this (www.uwec.edu)? jwil1 (65)
677790 2008-06-12 11:48:00 have a look at this article (support.microsoft.com) it gives a few tips on possible reasons.

Also if you have a read of This part article (www.smartcomputing.com 4%2F07s04.asp) it looks like its a power related problem, as in the laptop is possibly closing down, hence when it wakes up its has to ask what you want to do.

To test this, if you put the laptop to standby, how long is it in standby mode, Minutes hours over night ?

If its a lengthy time, try putting it in standby then bringing it out after 2-3 minutes - see what happens.

Think I may ( hopefully have) found your problem, go to the control Panel, Power options/ ADVANCED Tab, down the bottom where it says " when I press the sleep button" check what its set to As shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz)

677791 2008-06-12 11:50:00 Hi Steve

Could you tell us what type of laptop you have because the Makers sometimes install their own power management program which over-rides the normal Windows effort .

It is my guess, there may be some confusion either how you are resuming from standby and/or the setting of the power management program . For example there is a setting which directs the computer to "Ask me what to do" when a certain button is pushed . If we can find that then I think we can fix your problem .

If you are using the normal Windows power management system goto
START>CONTROL PANEL>POWER OPTIONS >ADVANCED . Check settings in lower part of screen under Power Buttons .

Hope this helps

Wainuitech and Burnzee, as I drifted off to sleep last night I had a flash of the Power Options in Control Panel and made a mental note to look there in the morning. ESP from you ;) both?

:) Yes that did it. Thanks. I chose the "Do Nothing" option. This problem has been bugging me for awhile and I was reluctant to ask here on PF1 because I had an idea that the answer was simple and that I solved it on another laptop several years ago.

jwil1, yes that pic is the Shutdown options box.

Wainuitech, about the time left in Standby, last night I noticed that if it was in Standby for a very short time, a second, the Shutdown Options box did not appear. But any longer and it did.

BTW, this old laptop of my wife's is a Compaq Presario 900, Athlon, around 6 or 7 years old. With PF1 help I added more RAM a few weeks ago so its now 624 Mb. I have it 'tuned up' so it is lean and mean as possible and I am surprised how nicely responsive it is. Does not have DVD, the battery is shot, USB transfer slow, and video encoding would be a chore, but for the usual stuff its just fine.

OK now, I am going to need some other assistance later today so I hope you all will be around. My desktop is out of action due to a power surge a few days ago. Surge protector did not do its job, #@$%X#&!!

677793 2008-06-12 21:51:00 Good that it was fixed - The fact that a couple of us suggested the same thing - and your ESP :D Usually means every ones thinking along the same lines (for once - Only kidding);)

Regarding the last problem with the Surge protector failing - try a different Power Supply first .

Just need to take the side off the case, unplug the power connections to the components on the existing one and plug in a different one, leave it hanging outside the case just for testing purposes .
I got a customers PC in the workshop at the moment - similar power surge, the persons son " who Knows all about computers" who Spent the last 4 days telling his parents they need to buy a new one as its stuffed, didn't do the basic testing -I plugged in a Test PSU and away it went .
