| 677705 | 2008-06-12 04:16:00 | Y halo thar, I need some help :horrified If this won't work, I'll just ditch the router and keep my stairway as a death trap with my heinously long telephone cord coming from across the house into my room. :illogical Well, maybe I'll call Linksys, but man I hate troubleshooting over the phone, especially when I have to run from the phone room to this room after every instruction. So to get into it: I just signed up with Telecom a week or so ago. I already had my own router (Linksys WRT54G) so I asked for their single modem, rather than spend $100 for their modem/router. The problem may be that the modem they gave me is not compatible with my router, or wireless internet at all, but Telecom and Xtra never mention anything like that. Man, I regret buying the router before looking into that. The modem they gave me is a Thomson ST536v6. It functions fine. If I'm connected directly to the modem, internet works and all, though if I check it's connectivity, it tells me it failed connecting to these DNS Server 1 (202.27.158.40) DNS Server 2 (202.27.156.72) It connects to the gateway correctly, though. Once I place the router between the modem and the computer (wireless or wired) the computer still recognizes the connection, but all I can load is the routers embedded page. Running the routers installation CD doesn't help, because it hangs when trying to access the internet. I have no idea what it expects me to do for all of the configuration on these embedded pages, and I really doubt they expect every new user to have to do so. Regardless, if I can get it to work this way, that would be fine. And yes, I'm sure I've connected all of the cables correctly. I've been troubleshooting this on my own for a few days now. :groan: |

| 677706 | 2008-06-12 04:34:00 | Also should tell you that the modem appears to want a PPPoA, but the router only has options for Auto DHCP, PPPoE, Telstra... and two others I can't remember, but definitely not PPPoA. Interesting that this forum doesn't allow for editing of the original post. Sorry for the double post regardless. |

| 677707 | 2008-06-12 04:44:00 | If your router doesn't have a PPPoA option, you'll need a new router - PPPoA is the only protocol supported for most New Zealand ADSL connections. The only other option is to use double-NAT (i.e. NAT on both the modem and the router, and take the modem out of bridge mode). Interesting that this forum doesn't allow for editing of the original post. Sorry for the double post regardless.It does allow this, but only for 15 minutes after the post was submitted. |

No, double-nat isn't hard, but it's at the expense of a large performance penalty on the modem - the single-pc ones aren't usually grunty enough to handle a full network's worth of nat traffic, and in my experience they regularly crash because of it. |

I'm hearing that the WRT54G is supposed to be set up with PPPoE, and it functions with PPPoA. I still don't know how to go about setting it all up correctly, though. It sounds like you've got an gateway/dns IP address problem in the WRT54G How do I go about solving this? |

IP Address: 222.154.166.168 (changes every time I restart the modem) Primary DNS: 202.27.158.40 Secondary DNS: 202.27.156.72 Gateway: 219.89.57.1 Which one would the default be? The Linksys routers IP is 192.168.2.1 Where am I supposed to put the IP's in? First page of the configuration (the main one) looks like this (PPPoE) help.3web.com (DHCP/Auto) www.columbia.edu |
