677557 2008-06-11 10:40:00 XP Home SP1 was full of spyware etc. Cleaned it out and all was well. Installed SP3 and tried to instal Norton360 (client purchased before I was involved and want it on - I hate Nortons). Norton complained about not having access permissions to the reg and then required C++. At this point gave up on Nortons and uninstall SP3. After this PC crashed and did a repair install.

Now on logon get "have to activate blah blah do you want to do it now" Click yes and just goes back to Logon option and stays in this endless loop.

Since I can't activate via Safe Mode that doesn't help.

I have done some Google searches with limited result so far but still looking.

Anyone know the reg entry to change/delete to stop this.

I have access to safe mode.

Ethernet is showing to be configured OK and can ping the PC fine.

Ideas any1

677558 2008-06-11 10:46:00 This may have helped (solutions.symantec.com)

After SP3 was installed. Try it now if you can get in somehow (try safe mode)

677559 2008-06-11 10:55:00 I will try the regfix but that article is related to when Nortons is installed before the upgrade.

Nortons has never been installed and haven't been able to get it to install.

I think I'll backup the user data and format the damn thing and start again if I can't stop the activation loop.

677560 2008-06-11 11:05:00 Well I know Symantec programs, and SP3 dont play nice together.

MS tried to blame Symantec and vice-versa, and thats why Symantec made that tool

677561 2008-06-11 21:28:00 From my reading the tool was to remove multiple reg entries that were written when SP3 was installed while Norton was installed. Norton has only tried to be installed after SP3 was installed and then it came up with Reg permission errors and required C++

I will still give the reg tool a go if I can get it to load.

Cheers

677562 2008-06-12 11:28:00 Just to follow up. I couldn't seem to solve this problem. Did a repair install twice more with same result. Have now backed up data and reformated. berryb (99)
