406056 2005-11-21 08:55:00 Hi all,

I'm just shopping around at the moment for a new (preferably cheap) notebook with a Pentium M or Centrino Cpu. I know Dick Smith has alot of latops with Celeron and Sempron processors for $1500 or less, but does anyone know if there is any Notebooks that have Pentium M CPU's for around that price... ...in NZ?

Thanks for any help you can give.

M.

406057 2005-11-21 12:04:00 You would be better off with AMD64 if your budget is "cheap".

You will get a bigger HD and more battery life for less than P4 M

pentium M is different from a pentium4M, Battery life will be far better in the pentiumM then your AMD64.
after having a quick look around the pentiumM laptops start just under the 2grand mark and just over for the centrino laptops, which is a combination of intel processor, wifi, and chipset.
Dick smiths have a toshiba (www.dse.co.nz) a little over the budgetbut not to bad

having a battery life of approx 3 hours contributes to easy mobile computing.

This (www.dse.co.nz) is what I call a better buy, bigger HD and XP Pro, web cam, longer battery life....
I cant find the quote for the AMD but they last for 4-5 hours

If my maths is correct 4 hours is longer than 3 hours. You also get more features for the same price.

406062 2005-11-22 05:10:00 Thanks for the help everyone...

I looked at the Turion models at DSE as well but I havn't been able to find many reviews of the chips other then that run very hot.

I will be using the Notebook for pretty heavy cpu intensive audio work. THe notebook will be generally always connected to the mains when in use so battery life is not a big issue. But CPU power and the CPU's running temperture could be...

I'm looking for something that has at least a 1mb (pref 2mb) L2 Cache and suitably fast FSB. While lots of people have recommended Apple Powerbook's for their stability, at this stage they are just too far outside of my price range. Is there a 'authentic' apple reseller in NZ?

I've read lots of good reviews about the Centrino chips running well. but from what I've found they start around the $2000 mark....

Are Celeron and Sempron chips that bad?

Thanks again for anyones help/opinions...
