405588 2005-11-19 23:03:00 Tis been a while since I've been here. I see Chills still in the Linux game :). Haven't "UDGRADED" to XP as our family Win 98 box just seems to just keep trouping on. Thereis more NTbased MS Windows hacks these days anyway. Picked up a 19" CRT momitor so Connie could see things a bit better. This ol RH 7.3 box, a P200mmx has been resurected and now takes pride of place in the conservatory networked to the Win 98 thingy. I't's been sitting unused for about 5-6 months now, gathering dust. Things have been real busy at work, so little time to dabble apart from the weekends, which I prefer to spend on the motorcycles anyway. Just want to get home on weekdays, have dinner, and sleep. It now has a nice 17" CRT which I managed to save from being dumped. Looks like things have certainly picked up in Linux land. I now have a Yahoo and MSN chat client installed. A bit about this machine. It is a HP3216, P200mmx cpu, 128megs of ram, 4 gig hdd, 40x cdrom, 1 meg video built-in, network card, built-in sound chip. It also was to be scraped but found it's way home.
A nice wee unit IMHO. Anyway I did have RH8 installed but had to jump through hoops to get some things going. Had tried RH 7.2 from a book at the library and a full copy of RH7.3 was on Trademe at a reasonable price, so I bought it and installed it. Everything worked basicly strait off so I decided it would stay. Certainly easier than a popular commercial OS with usefull apps to boot.. Have whittled down the apps to those I actually us, as well as installing a few more up to date ones. WindowMaker is my Xwindows window manager. I like the multiple desktop idea in *Nixs. One for monitoing the system, one dedicated to a terminal session, one for the intenet, well I guess you get the picture. Programs I commonly use are Opera/Mozilla, Abiword, Gnumeric, Gimp, aMSN/Yahoo! chat clients, Ark for graphical compression tasks, obviously Samba to share files, Evolution for PIM, Gnome commander for graphical file management, oh and of course the built-in firewall. The Fadora Lagacy Project provides critical security updates, Yum/Synatic/Apt/RPM provide easy program installation/updating. Compliation isn't as much of a problem either if I have to, but tha'ts very rare. So you see with Linux as with Windows you don't need the latest and greatest to have a good computing experiance. You just need to know a bit bit about each OS or get somone who knows what they are doing to help out. Hell even the grandkids can this machine.
