405320 2005-11-18 11:27:00 Its Great to see the Rugby World Cup 2011 returning to NZ after 24 years

Can NZ host such a big event successfully with its current infrastructure and size of stadium? The passion is there in everyone to get behind fill up a stadium and show support of rugby and the AB's.

The major challenge will be getting big enough stadiums and to fill them up

Why cant they just build another Stadium instead of upgrading Eden Park to a mere 60 000. Let alone other NZ cities hold world calss matches with their backyard style grounds! They are expecting to have 60 000 visitors to come over....where will the capacity be to seat the fans with the locals jumping to get a seat ticket as well. Unless NZRFU is relying on most Kiwis getting SKY installed for $99.

Having 2 major stadiums in Auck to hold matches will be nice start
Yes it will be expensive but a couple of hundred millions dollars will see a brand new spanking Stadium that is truly world class. The govt i am sure they can folk that much (put the interest back on student loans).

With the Lions tour, the streets around Eden park were closed off on the night of the game. I still remember the wait times on Dominion Rd..just getting home from City took 1hr. And the number of ppl coming over for RWC2011 will be 3 times then that of Lions Tour!!

Imagine the chaos when successive games will be held every other night!! Mt Eden will be clogged like a manhole.

Having 2 stadiums spread out will sure relieve the congestion and can have the fans spread out. This is just for Auck which i think will end of holding Semis and Final due to its 'large' seating capacity of 60 000. Wont be surprised if the quarter finals also end up in Auck.

As for the motorways...what can. They better start speeding up or get started on drilling underground and laying down more railways.

The only thing really positive about all this is the time NZ has on its side to bring everything up to standard with 6 years to go.

405321 2005-11-18 11:34:00 An interesting post, but as we already have a thread running on this topic, wouldn't it be better added to that?

Before people start adding to this one...
And we have two...

P.S. Welcome to Press F1

405322 2005-11-18 22:42:00 Why cant they just build another StadiumThat's not a stupid idea. They could build it somewhere away from the major centres...East, South or West Auckland has HEAPS of empty space, where game crowds won't bother the locals.

I think though that having two stadiums is uneccessary - and the money they could get by selling the prime real estate land from Eden Park would contribute significantly to the costs.

Altogether an excellent idea I reckon.

No such thing as too many threads about Alfa Romeos.. oops, I meant rugby. The next best thing to playing the game is talking about it!

405324 2005-11-19 00:09:00 We have ericcson stadium in penrose... this could be used for pool play games. It has capacity for about 30,000 at the moment, but has been expanded, so I am not sure the current size right now. mister harbies (5607)
405325 2005-11-19 11:24:00 What is the expected revenue and expenditure from the World Cup hosting? At least we get some publicity as a result of this hosting. Don'

Cheers :)

405326 2005-11-19 15:32:00 What is the expected revenue and expenditure from the World Cup hosting?Aussie rugby union apparently scored themselves $45 million after paying off the ripp-off fees of the IRB from the 2003 cup.

The additional boost to the economy would be hard to measure, but would be incredibly high. Businesses (pubs mostly) were reportedly getting 30 x turnover figures.
