2005-11-18 05:54:00 | just got back from Magnum Mac and i am not a happy chappy. Took my 18 month old Ipod 3g 15gig in because the right channel in the audio had gone. Magnum Mac tested it and confirmed that it had gone but there was nothing they could do about it, as apple wont let them open it up or provide replacement parts, the case gets worse because its out of warranty. Apparently though they diagnosed the problem as being the pre amp on the main board that had failed. Heres the punch line though. They wont replace it, they say that i need to pay either $429+gst for a SECOND HAND OR REFURBISHED 3G 15 GIG, or pay another $550 - $600 for another Ipod of similar specs. Heres the parts i cannot comprehend though. What company will not stand by their products quality even if it is out of warranty, it is a faulty ipod, nothing i could do could cause the pre amp to fail like it did. The least they could do is come to the party and offer me a significant trade in or similar deal. Because the main reason i purchased it (i purchased before the ipod craze, for functionality not looks) was because of the quality. I did not want to spend a lesser amount and have a cheap ipod imitation, because I ASSUMED APPLE WAS A REPUTABLE COMPANY- (insert tui ad line) yeah right. These things should last longer than a year and a half, and if not they should have a warning sticker on them WARNING, PRODUCT NOT DESIGNED TO LAST LONGER THAN 18 MONTHS . I have the contact number for the apple division head of Renaissance here with me, and i will be contacting him on monday, because i do not think this is acceptable or fair. fail that i will be contacting fair go. This is not on, especially not from a company like apple. Comment if you want. | Tux (606) | |

2005-11-18 06:13:00 | I would have thought Apple were highly likely to pull such a stunt, Even your "WARNING, PRODUCT NOT DESIGNED TO LAST LONGER THAN 18 MONTHS" rings true, The first iPods had a battery that would last about that long, And Apple refused to sell new batterys, or make it an option for people to have them replaced. Initial consumer spewing made Apple change their tune, and started to offer a service where they would replace the battery, at about 50000% more expensive then the cost of the battery and service. Since then they have had to use a better battery after admitting they knew exactly how long the battries would last, Like many, they think marketing equals screwing their customers.

2005-11-18 06:47:00 | Isn't it the profit margin on the iPod range that 's kept Apple afloat. If Sony hadn't fallen asleep would Apple still be around? | PaulD (232) | |
2005-11-18 07:11:00 | See if you can get a replacement keyboard as well. Seems the return key isn't working, which is hindering your ability to paragraph. | ninja (1671) | |

2005-11-18 08:01:00 | Unfortunately, this appears to be the Apple way. You have to purchase Applecare (which only takes the warranty to 2 years for ipods, 3 years for others) or you will find yourself in trouble. If the mainboard is broken then you get quoted some absurb number to get a replacement (even before the labour is considered). In some cases, the best offer is a reduction in price on a new mac (when dealing with Magnum Mac). The Consumer Guarantee Act should apply to all non-business purchases -18 months cannnot be considered a reasonable lifetime for a piece of equipment. I remember there was something on Fair Go about iPods. At work we even had Apple attempt to get out of accepting Applecare warranty claims because the orignal purchasers had not never registered the Applecare. Needless to say, in the end, common sense prevailed. The exception to all this is when Apple decide that a problem is widespread (e.g. iBook motherboards), and then they can be fixed even out of warranty. Even then, a time limit applies to get your repair claim made :angry Stick to your guns and you should get it fixed for nothing.
