404800 2005-11-16 09:51:00 Hi people,

I'm buying a car. Yes, at last I am 15 1/2 years old and have saved up enough cash. I'm looking at insurance for it, a must have, and wonder what companies members here like.

I want 3rd party fire and theft, with as low an excess as possible, and premiums likewise. I will be putting in a burgler alarm, so a clause that eliminates the excess when it's stolen with the alarm enabled is essential, otherwise there's no point (that car's worth about $1500).

What companies are good? I got a quote from State for $585pa, with a $1000 (keep in mind I'm 15) excess and no excess for thefts with the alarm.

AA will do just $290pa for 3rd party only, but won't insure me for theft because of my age (now that's illogical...).

The car is a 1991 Nissan Bluebird ARX, 1.8L auto. Its quite a nice car, only 145000kms. So now we can have an insurance-company war :D.

Cheers,
George

404802 2005-11-16 09:58:00 They won't offer me fire or theft though, and I think it is probably more likely to be stolen than me crash it. Theft insurance is vital. Thanks though. george12 (7)

404804 2005-11-16 10:05:00 Your 15, no driving experience, and your car is worth $1500?

And you honestly belive a $1500 dollar car is more likely to be stolen then damaged by a newbie driver.

Excuse me while I hurt myself laughing.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHA.

404805 2005-11-16 10:08:00 I have fire & theft with AMI, george.

Is it beccause of your age they won't offer it to you?

Congrats on the saving up...

404806 2005-11-16 10:28:00 Hardly seems worth worrying about theft, given the value of the car.
Just buy an immobiliser or something.

Car thefts aren't common in Dunedin though, so I'm not the person to ask.

404807 2005-11-16 10:36:00 I've been driving for 6 months and never had an accident, or caused any remotely close shave. I don't think either a theft or an accident is likely but I knew a guy who wrote off a lamborgini and spent the next 15 years of his life paying it off. george12 (7)
404808 2005-11-16 10:43:00 Doubt I could pay for a lamborgini in 20 years...... Metla (12)
404809 2005-11-16 10:59:00 I imagine he left school at 15, got a full-time job at the local supermarket and paid the guy all $400/week or the next 20 years. Yup, that's $400,000.

So by the time he's 35 he has a full time checkout job and no money or assets. And all because he couldn't be bothered paying his $8/week :(

And it's all the lambo owner's fault for not having insurance that pays for uninsured drivers.
