404472 2005-11-15 06:26:00 I confess to only watching the first half of the story due to disgust.
Yet again they screw it up.
They said - to protect yourself against the likes of keyloggers:
1) Update your O/S
2) Update your firewall
3) Have an antivirus program

Thats it.
Well, updating your O/S will do sfa
Likewise updating the firewall - properly configuring it would be more to the point.
And as for AV, ok, but what about anti-spyware????

And Mr whatshisname telling his personal story about losing his money said:
I was rung from home and told there was no money so I logged onto internet banking and yes, 4 transactions had cleaned out the cheque account.

SO he sure wasn't logging onto internet banking on his own PC was he.
Idiot.

Still, shouldn't complain - all these people getting the wrong advice will keep me busy won't it.

So having a "decent" anti spyware program will track key loggers will it ? I was wondering how one detects them. I have ewido and adaware. Would that be the sort of thing ? As for all the others...items 1 through 3. check.

404474 2005-11-15 06:36:00 Have more than one anti-spyware - yes they will detect the presence of keyloggers.
Having additional protetction such as RegDefend will also help in preventing the install of them in the first place.
Read the FAQ here to see a list of useful programs.

404475 2005-11-15 06:42:00 Your right, you didn't see the whole story, they did mentioned antispyware plod (107)
404476 2005-11-15 06:49:00 nz is sure behind in online banking technology, Europe has had those "tokens" for several years now.

the Rabobank in Holland has a similar thingy like that, but you need to insert your card to get the correct number.

i think having a 3 way verifcation system would be better, like password, then the "token" tool, and possibly send out a temp password via your mobile.

404477 2005-11-15 06:59:00 The program mentioned that 70% of internet users in NZ do not take security precautions - is this true? I wonder if Mr Whathisname, from 'Close Up' would leave his car unlocked in the street while shopping - or whatever!
Goodness Gracious Me!

404478 2005-11-15 06:59:00 Just had a brief look at the website recommended in that story Netsafe (www.netsafe.theoutfitgroup.co.nz), and they do mention spyware and what program you can use. They also correctly define the word "hacker" as opposed to "cracker" here (www.netsafe.theoutfitgroup.co.nz). Jen (38)

I think ASB is currently trialing that with a small portion of customers. However, I do remember reading that it would cost something like $10 per month or something for this feature. Quite outrageous!

Yeah so did I. And they do. But the news guy didn't. At least their site is better.

i would say thats proberly underestimated. a lot have sicurity precations that don't work ie out of date antivirus and windows firewall.

my estimate is that 90% of home pc's are infected with something.

antispyware do not always detect key loggers. AV progs are not good a picking up trojens. hence the need for multiable types of defence.

one good point that was mentioned is that peole are often infected and used to attack someone else. my bet is that those 70% of people without sicurity precations don't give a stuff who they infect or that they are party to other malicous/illegal acts.
