405157 2005-11-17 21:34:00 ... and I can supply the sharks

I think the government must first improvise Eden Park Stadium (it is going to be held there, right?) before wooing rugby fans from all over the world (well, not over the world, I guess) to come over here.

Cheers :)

405158 2005-11-18 03:08:00 Obviously its good for NZ to host it for obvious reasons, being a resident here.

I think NZ got it from their love of the game and their image.
I would think thou, NZ's infrastructure does not compete with bigger cities. Look at transportation, shopping, availability via hours, what is buyable selection in NZ, small stadiums, limited events, not to mention for many commodities NZ is expensive comparative to others (that's not just broadband :D ).

15min for a bus or 30min or 1hr in the w'ends, early closing times, CBD closed off other thant he night life part of the city, unable to go shopping after dinner. Wellington unable to land a large aeroplane. 60,000 audience stadiums. Apart from AKL's few stores such as DFS Galleria, one really cannot get touristy labelled goods.

NZ is already the best known nation re: rubgy. Apart from money and saying 2011 we done that, been there and for the NZ All Blacks to play at home. JP has far more to benefit from the sport than NZ or SA. The influence of hte game can be spread to all over Asia, while NZ and AU are already matured.

405160 2005-11-18 03:59:00 Japan has been playing rugby for 60 years, a world cup wouldn't cause the nation to go rugby mad and then have rugby spread over Asia anymore then we would go soccer mad if a major tourement was held here. Those that dont care still wouldn't care, those whose follow the media for direction in life would buy into the hype, and drop it just as quickly for the next big thing, And soccer mania wouldn't spread to all the pacific nations. 405161 2005-11-18 08:52:00 Terrific. Taxpayers dollars to upgrade stadiums etc. Then a bunch of yobbos turn up and trash the place and then go home. Yippee. Not.
I agree with the "meathead" description. But its probably more most of the fans...

405162 2005-11-18 10:03:00 Yay, the rugby World Cup final will be held at Eden Park with a massive total capacity of, 35,000 is it? sorry, but I think the NZRFU has taken on a bone way way to big than it can chew. C'mon, France - Ireland in the paddocks of Napier or Palmerston North? NZ is totally un-equipped for this, hosting a Lions tour and hosting 15 teams at once is a difference that's too big for words. And just seeing Dick Hubbard in his all black jersey full of confidence that Auckland's traffic congestion can be "fast-tracked", I wish him a lot of luck realising that.
NZ has the best rugby team without doubt, and it's fans are one of the most passionate, there's probably no country in the world where rugby is a such a dominant sport(and the biggest game in the world such a "dwarf") but it seems crazy, but hosting the World Cup is totally not suited to be held in here.

Oh, on the other hand, maybe if the World Cup is held here, the All Blacks can actually win it. All my other arguments can go out the window :yuck:

405165 2005-11-18 10:41:00 No, that's 2 elections away.

For my money, anyone with time to guess now about what'll happen in 2011 just hasn't got enough to do...
