678242 2008-06-14 00:09:00 Have just installed a new GA-EP35-DS3 motherboard.
1 sata hard drive & 10 sockets to plug it into.
8 are grouped together & 2 are separate.
Yes I did read the manual.
I chose 1 on the separate socket & it seems to work ok but are still not sure.
Also there is some sugestion that at least 2 identical hard drives should be used to get best performance.
Anyone familiar with this?

678243 2008-06-14 01:30:00 Hi driftwood.

I honestly can't say why two of the ports would be seperate. The motherboards I have only feature four ports which are all together. However if it works fast enough then I suspect you shouldn't have any further problems.

The two identical hard drives thing may be referring to running two identical disks in RAID 0 to increase performance. Unless you're willing to buy another disk (you will get the extra capacity too) then it's nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps.

678244 2008-06-14 01:32:00 Yep, it's normally something to do with particular RAID setups.

They should be numbered, plug it into SATA0, or if there is no 0 use SATA1.

Using 2 drives and setting up a RAID will increase performance, but although a standard 2 disk RAID1 array increases speeds by 100%, as each drive only has to write half the data it normally would, the chance of data increases loss by 100% too, because if one of the drives were to fail, you lose everything.

If you really want to get into RAID, I'd recommend setting up a system like RAID3, or putting one large drive in and backing up important data to it.

678245 2008-06-14 01:57:00 Thanks for that.
I'll move it to the one called "SATAII0" & see how it goes.
The one I was using was called "Gigabyte SATA2" it's purple & all the others are orange.
The choices are SATAII/0/1/2/3/4/5 GSATAII/0/1 Gigabyte SATA2
