677869 2008-06-12 11:21:00 Ok so I blew up my old pc.....blue light...smoke the works.

So I got a new one.

Figured I may be able to recover the stuff off the old Hdd, if it was still alive.

When I brought the new pc I also got a Freeagent external storage thing.

Being the kiwi that I am and showing a little know how..I took to it with a screw driver. Got it open removed the SATA drive, Which thankfully was a seagate. The same make as the one I had sitting on the desk that has all the important stuff on it...no, not porn either.

So I pluged it into the external body, attached all the leads inside, plugged into a vacant usb port...success it made noise like it's starting up, I can hear the spindles churning and everything.

only problem is

I can't see the drive on the New pc at all

Help, suggestions....and no...throwing it out is not an option at this stage.

677870 2008-06-12 11:31:00 Wait, you took apart a retail, ready to go external HDD to put in the one from you old computer? Am I reading that right?

Your old HDD might just be dead. The best thing to do is to open up your new PC and attach the old drive as a slave and see if it can be picked up.

Or get a proper external HDD enclosure (empty) and put it in there. You might have damaged the Seagate enclosure by opening it.

surely if it was dead it wouldn't be making noise like it was spinnign up????

677872 2008-06-12 11:35:00 Thats if the new pc has SATA on it .

In which case, just plug it into a spare SATA header .

Since SATA's dont use slave

If the new PC does have / support SATA, is it SATA 1 or 2 onboard?

And is the old SATA hdd SATA 1 or 2?

677875 2008-06-12 19:38:00 Try using a linux cd, I just ran ubuntu and retrieved some data off a drive that XP could not see in my external case, I could not slave it as it was a lappie HDD gary67 (56)

Just as an aside, I didn't think there were any new mobos produced in the last few years with just IDE. Most come with one IDE connector & a bunch of SATA.

Then its either not a New PC or you got ripped off.

Even some older motherboards had sata. ALl new ones have at least 2.

Just because the HDD is getting power and going through the mechanical motions doesn't mean it wasn't damaged.
