678890 2008-06-16 09:33:00 Have just installed XP Home on an old PC
GA-5AMMC Motherboard.
Goes good except for the USB ports
Latest drivers I could find are 2001.
USB is enabled in Bios.
Device manager shows "Open Host Controller" & "USB Root Hub" under USB Controllers.
They were working in win98 when I started.
OS is activated & now fully updated.
Any ideas?

678891 2008-06-16 09:44:00 Is SP1, 2 or 3 installed?? Are the mobo drivers installed?

You need both

So its only USB 1.1?? Doesnt sound like it has USB 2 on it

After you install the above reboot, delete whats under USB controllers in device manager then reboot again

678892 2008-06-16 09:50:00 Thanks speedy.
As I said, have installed 2001 chipset drivers.
Installed SP1 now updated to SP3.
Have already done the other.
Thats why I'm headscratching.

678893 2008-06-16 10:00:00 WHAT are you plugging in that isnt working? Speedy Gonzales (78)
678894 2008-06-16 10:02:00 2 different usb memory sticks & a digital camera. Driftwood (5551)
678895 2008-06-16 10:13:00 And you did install the drivers for the cam as well?

Has it got a card reader, or are you plugging the sticks into the cam?

678896 2008-06-16 10:52:00 No not cards, usb "thumb drive"
No software installed for the devices, but its not event detecting them.
It's still got the old Bios, I can't find a later one, I think thats the problem.

678897 2008-06-16 11:15:00 Hmm could be that its only USB 1.1 onboard I think.

Maybe the ports arent fast enough for the USB flash drives?

But then you said they worked on 98 (was it 98 SE)? I dont think 98 supports USB 2, if these flash drives are USB 2.

I think I found the Gigabyte site for the mobo, there was only 1 BIOS there

Look in event viewer. See if its saying anything here

678898 2008-06-16 11:36:00 Yes it will be only USB 1.1 but it should still detect a flash drive.
I use them on other systems with USB 1.1.
When I uninstall the host controller & reboot with the flash drive connected, the system briefly detects it & shows an icon in the task bar as it is reinstalling the host controller.
Then it disapears without going any further.
