407812 2005-11-27 04:22:00 it's safer to go with medical advice...
Take a look at the history of medicine. There sure weren't (or should that be aren't?) known for their open minds.
For instance:

"Joseph Lister belongs on a short list of the world's greatest doctors. His research taught him that killing germs would save lives and allow surgeons to operate inside bodies. Fierce resistance met his ideas and he had to defend them over the opposition of England's top physicians. "

Anyone going against the current "wisdom" is rubbished. Today its no different so don't believe everything you are told.

407813 2005-11-27 09:25:00 You have a point, but fat-clogged arteries aren't a new discovery like Lister's. That was the equivalent of rocket science.
And you don't have to work in an operating theatre to actually see them, with the number of medical documentaries around. We're not talking obscure complaints here. The heart is simply a pump with valves & tubing.
I guess people who believe they know better than doctors en masse can just take their chances.
Most of us know what we should be doing to keep healthy: the difficulty is sticking with it.

407814 2005-11-27 17:46:00 There is one very important point always ignored by all "DO Gooders".

That is the difference in meanings of the words "Can " and "Will"

As in "butter can clog your arteries" and "will clog.."

Or "smoking will cause cancer" and "smoking can cause"

Why not say "Driving will cause accidents" instead of "driving can cause accidents" "Ban all cars from the road"

Well it makes as much sense as "Ban all tobacco products"

I don't mean to be insulting, (I only intend to give you someting to think off & I hope you can prove me wrong) have you checked your cholesterol level from a blood test, you might be one of those people who are "skinny as" from outside but a "cholesterol time bomb" from the inside, a stroke or heart attack waiting to happen.

Yes, common sense. I was thinking more of these stupid labels that say "no cholesterol". You can't eat cholesterol - its manufactured by your body. And yes there are 2 types. Its a matter of balance - not eliminating the stuff. After all its an essential substance required to make your cells.
My point is there is a lot of **** put around by so called dieticians.
Diabetics for instance are told to avoid too many dairy products etc to manage their sugar levels. Utter rot. Sugar and carbohydrates are what puts it up.

Do you mind? Some of us only have to look at a square of chocolate and we put on 5kg.

Can't say I have taken much notice of the changes in butter because I don't eat it but I do really miss having a genuine cream bun with proper cream and proper jam in it rather than that tasteless artificial muck they pass off as pathetic substitutes. :(

I'm 5ft 5in [don't know what in metric] and have always ranged from 47 - 50kg. Can eat anything I like and don't put on weight. I don't have a high cholesterol. And....I was as fit as anything....when I had a heart attack at 51.

Didn't even know it was a heart attack, just had cramp in my left arm and developed into a cold sweat while driving one morning. As I was just around the corner from my doctor's surgery at the time, decided to pop in and see him, before continuing into town. Was blown away when after just explaining to Dr that something was wrong, he and the nurse raced me into the next room, put an oxygen mask on me and started pumping drugs into me. The nurse then told me I was having a heart attack. Ambulance had me in hospital within 30 mins of my arriving at Dr's, a stent was inserted in my heart and came to in ICU later that afternoon.

I had no prior symptoms, no chest pain or warnings.
I did not have a high cholesterol, but I do have a low good cholesterol.
Low good cholesterol comes from being unfit or genetic.
I was very fit, but my mother and my grandfather both died suddenly of heart attacks. My grandfather was tall and skinny, my mother was short and slim.
Neither smoked at anytime in their life. I do.

Women don't get obvious warnings like men do when they have a heart attack. One of Dr Barnard's [heart transplant surgeon] nurses didn't even know she was having a heart attack, nor that she had had previous ones, when she went to her Dr complaining of feeling really tired and rundown. One of my previous clients also didn't know. She found that out when in hospital for another condition.
So, it can happen to anyone, at any time. Enjoy today like there is no tomorrow. Don't assume that those you care about know that you love them, tell them often.

FoxyMX, if you want real cream and jam in your cream bun, go ahead and enjoy it. You may not be around long enough for it to go to your hips or blow your cholesterol levels.

Do you know where I can get one though?

It has to be one of those big, beautifully fresh soft buns split at the top, oozing with piped real cream, dusted with icing sugar and that all-essential big blob of real raspberry jam on the top .

Mmmmmmmm . . . .
